Hello. Newbie to Windows 7 as a refugee from Linux. I was drawn to Win 7 by the promise of parental controls. There are some issues I am unable to resolve and would really appreciate the input from the many Win Wizards in this forum.

First, I cannot deny access to IE 8 for any user account. Even when I try manually, I get a message saying access to IE8 cannot be denied.

Next, I tried a workaround by installing Firefox because I can deny access to that, but when I went to delete IE 8, I found it was not on the installed software list.

Finally, I tried to set a zero access list for IE 8 control but, the list is denial driven which means, to keep my kids off the internet, I would have to enter an exhaustive list of web sites.

Does anyone have a shorter way of keeping kids off the internet?

Disconnect the Internet? Anyways to uninstall IE, hit the "Windows Key" > then type "windows features" > click "Turn Windows features on or off"

Welcome, this is the one way I know of, but it costs. I will continue to look. Turning windows features on or off is good, except that your child can turn it back on.

Thanks for the quick responses. I guess I should have been more specific and asked how to keep the kids off the Internet while allowing Dad access to CNN and ESPN.

I'm not keen on dropping more money for software (Linux Ubuntu background, remember).

I'll try turning off IE and see if I can keep the kids from turning it back on.

Do you wish to deny your kids access to the Internet completely, or just restrict their access to specific sites?

I think you can have a password set up but i dont know how,some experts in these forums might know
Personal i think IE8 is crap and probably one of the slowest browsers outhere ,use FF or Chrome,but uninstalling it might effect your microsoft and other downloads which dont seem to work in other browsers, eg.my Nvidia will ony scan for lastest Drivers throught IE8(and older versions) IE is falling behind in Internet Browsing,JUST MY OPINION
You might want to look at IE9 Beta and see what features are on it???

You want to keep the kids off the Internet or use Parental Controls?

If you want to control the Internet access:

You could use the "Content Advisor" feature of IE8.

Click on "Tools" and then "Internet Options". (or without IE8 started, run the command "inetcpl.cpl")

In the "Internet Properties" window, select "Content".

In the "Content Advisor" section, select the "Enable" button.

On the "Ratings" tab you can select each category and then adjust the slider accordingly.

Once you have the categories "rated" you can click on the "Approved Sites" tab and add any sites that might otherwise be blocked by the ratings category.

On the "General" tab, you can set a "Supervisor" password that must be entered for anyone to turn off "Content Advisor" or adjust the settings.

The "Advanced" tab will allow you to set, well, more advanced options.

If you want to deny access altogether:

I would create individual user accounts for the children that do not have administrator access and password protect your login (which probably does have administrator access).

Then, in Windows Explorer, drill down to this path "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer", right click on "iexplore.exe", select the "Security" tab, click the "Edit" button, click on "Users", click the "Remove" button.

Now, when your children are logged on, they cannot use IE8 because they are not an authorized user (since you removed the "User" group).

You can also use this method to secure "Firefox".

Also, when you create your childrens user accounts as "Users" with no administrator access, they will not be able to install any other browser such as "Chrome" or "Safari".

The best ways are those "black box" devces that are hardware, similar to a router, that block at that level . Even if your kids know computers, and are administrators they can't get around it if you have it physically locked up.

I want to keep the kids from browsing the internet entirely. Here's what I did - I turned off IE 8 as logicearth described. I loaded Firefox for my own use and then denied access to Firefox for all other accounts.

I tried to turn IE 8 back on from the kids' accounts and it appears that Win 7 prevents that from happening. We'll see how that goes. My oldest is 14 and very computer savvy and, if there is a way, she will find it.
