IE 9 Compatibility Issues with Certain Frameworks

First off, I like IE9 for most anything. I only wish it were more compatible with some of web sites I frequent.

One of my hobbies is taking consumer surveys. I subscribe to a number of survey sites and get invitations every day. I found that when I upgraded to IE9 from IE8, I could no longer take certain surveys because the framework they were built with did some things that IE9 wouldn't deal with as IE8 did so well. I'm sure these web site building frameworks are doing all sorts of undocumented and down right evil things.

Speaking of evil frameworks for web sites - my oldest daughter teaches on-line classes in IT at a university in the northwest. She discovered that the commercial web site builder they were using did some bad and silly things with IE9. She had to tell all her students they had to avoid IE9 if they were in her class. When she visited a few weeks ago, she demonstrated some of these gems for me. Nothing crashed, but certain things just didn't work or look right.

What does work for me now is Chrome. I use it to access the gmail account I use for the survey invitations and then to run the surveys. Chrome never fails to do the right thing. I have also used virtual XP mode and IE8 with the expected success. It's just easier to launch Chrome and do my surveys. I use IE9 for all other web browsing.

To be sure - the IE9 compatibility mode does not solve these issues.

That's a fair question asking about examples . . .

The worst is one web site that insisted I did not have Flash 10 installed and refused to allow me to continue. I obviously have the most recent 10.2 that works so well with the nVidia GPU I have. I've also had links that just time out for no apparent reason, and when I go into Chrome and follow the same links, they work fine. My daughter showed me where the full screen editor she and her students use within the school's web site. She could not use the yellow highlighter tool, and had quite poor control over color in general. Her students are required to be able to fully utilize this on-line editor, which only works right in IE8 or some other "older" browsers. We tried IE9 with compatibility and that did not clear up all the color issues.

I also try accessing these survey web sites with my Android tablet. Using Dolphin HD I get compatibility somewhere between IE8 and IE9. That same web site that said I didn't have Flash didn't like Android with Flash 10.2 either. These web sites are using somewhat crappy infrastructures to do their presentations. We have to adapt if we want to use the web site they're built with. :sarc:

The websites have to be compatible with IE 9, not the other way around. The problem is most likely these sites are doing something specific for IE that does not work in the latest version. IE 9 is a lot more standards complaint then previous versions, a lot of the bugs that some of these frameworks are using no longer function.

Yes, that is the case. Now convince the operators of these web sites to clean up their act - not going to happen any time soon. So it does not matter how wonderful IE9 is if it does not work with the web sites that are out there in the world, no matter how wrong they are.
