IE error message

I had to do a recovery and now IE will not open.
Error msg: "The ordinal 70 could not be located in the dynamic link library ietutil.dll."

Why did you need to use system restore ?
Please state the exact issues you were having before system restore was needed and just how far did you go back too,
Did you check for windows updates after restore ?

I don't know whether to post reply or use quick reply?? Anyway long story short: I got a virus-windows wouldn't load. Yes I was running 2 anti programs. Took computer to shop. they wiped it. I brought it home and did a restore. The files restored to abnormal folders. I consulted restore support. They said problems were due to new user name put on at Geek squad. They set up another restore and it was still scrambled. So I've spent days trying to put things in their proper places and I probably didn't know enough to do this easily but by just muddling along things are working pretty well now except for IE. To answer your second question about updates-there are 2 updates marked "important" that wont install. One is for IE10 and one for IE 11. So any help is appreciated.

Are there any other Windows Updates (WU) offered or only those two?

View attachment 303844 OK-figured out the screenshot thing (I'm a veterinarian-obviously not much of a geek). I also downloaded and ran the update Mr Fixit which said nothing was wrong. The second website above I've looked at before and have not found anything helpful. From looking at the uninstalled updates I'm not even sure which version of IE that I'm not running.

Untick IE 10,
Leave the tick for IE 11
and do the update

So you'll be jumping over IE 10 and installing IE 11

the optionals can wait.

Do you want to see just today when I tried the IE 10 and 11 updates? It's a lot of data-will be a bunch of pages if Isnip and paste. Any better way to do this?

After you get C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log attached to a post, please follow thie tutorial.
Before you carry out the next phase, do you recall if there was a try again button on Windows Update when you got the error?

Post 3: Geek Squad "repair" wiped drive..... Thread Starter did restore, but had problems...

WU error code
Removed IE 10, tried IE 11 only -> 11 did not install.

Ok, I have a question for you before you go. I know you have a lot of time invested in this already.

A Clean install takes about 4-5 hours. Would it trouble you greatly to do a Clean install and avoid all of the system checking, log collection, and troubleshooting?

I'm only giving that as an option, something to think about. I'll have to ask another member to look at the information you'll be gathering anyway. So there's plenty of time to consider it as an option.

Once the logs are up and someone has the chance to look at them, it might be a simple fix or it might take just as long to do a Clean install.

It's always your choice how to proceed.

I'll stop back and see how things are going with the collecting and posting the data.

A repair install should have reinstalled IE8 - but it can get confused at times.
You need to rip out the dregs of IExx before attempting to upgrade - and I would recommend upgrading to each in turn, rather than attempting to skip a version.

What to do if you can?t uninstall Internet Explorer 9 should help - but ignore the System Restore recommendation as it will only confuse things further.

Looking at the command line in the link Noel provided, I'm going to say that it won't make a differrence.

Let's give Noel the opportunity to stop me before running it. If Noel doesn't post "No wait, don't do it" I think that the MS Fixit is a good option to try.

Bart brought up a good point off-list about you perhaps having done a full system recovery from manufacturer's media or Recovery Partition, rather than what I read as a repair install (I shouldn't post before finishing my first cup of coffee! )
If that is the case, then there is no harm in attempting the Fixit - but it won't work
You would need to check your hardware, since the Recovery process should leave you with a 'perfect' install, unless either RAM, HD, or CPU are faulty.

What to do if you can?t uninstall Internet Explorer 9
Expand (+) Solution 1: Run the Fix it Wizard
Click on the MS Fixit button (Microsoft Fix it 50778)
Select Run on the download option bar
Answer YES to any UAC prompts

If the MS Fixit does not restart your system
Manually restart it now.


You do not have to do anything else with that link.

• step 2 is a manual way of doing the same thing as the fixit, and
• step 3 is an alternative method of solving the issue that will undo what you just did,
  you don't want to do that.

Post something after running the fixiit and your system has been restarted.
