IE security updates

Are Internet explorer security updates from Windows Update necessary if I'm using another browser ? I would think not but, Windows Update keeps maintaining the security updates for it which can be sizable.

I would install the IE updates, and do. Many OS components and other software, such as Security programs use IE to update themselves without opening a browser window.
