Hi,

As the title states, I'm having big problems with the IE10 update, whatever I do it just will not update, giving me the following error:

View attachment 261117

I have followed the Windows Update Posting Instructions (hopefully!!), so there should be a CBS.zip file attached.

Thanks in advance for your help, it really is appreciated.

CheckSUR is clean
You appear to have run the SFC scan twice - which is not a problem :)
The first time it ran (finishing about 01:10) it found a fair number of problems and managed to fix all of them
The second time (finish around 01:30), it found no more problems to fix.

The remainder of the CBS log has some interesting comments - to select a few...

IE10 is unlikely to install wile the System Restore services are disabled - you need to re-enable System Restore and the VSS service, then try again.

Hi Noeldp,

Thanks for your quick reply, I turn off system restore as I use Erunt registry backup. Not sure about VSS service, how would I find out about that?

I won't be able to try anything for a few hours, but I'll give an update when I do.

Cheers, Roo

System Restore backs up a LOT more than just the registry!
There's no good reason that I know of that you can't use SR and ERUNT.

Check your VSS settings using the command
SC QC VSS

Check if it's currently running using the command
SC QUERYEX VSS

I turned SR back on, and created a restore point successfully, then ran the commands you asked with the following results:
View attachment 261220
It looks like it's on demand, even though it wasn't currently running (?).
I then tried reinstalling IE10, but had the same error.
I reran the SURT and sfc scan, and have attached the new cbs file.
For what it's worth, both my laptop and other boot on this machine are set out very similarly to this one, with SR disabled and they updated fine.

The 0x435 error in the QUERYEX result gives us this "no attempts to start this service have been made since last boot"

Please attempt to start the service - from an Elevated Command Prompt, run
NET START VSS

what is the result?

I then tried reinstalling IE10, but got the same error as original. It seems to hang with the progress bar about 80% complete.
I ran the sc queryex vss command on my other boot on this computer to compare (as it updated ok), with the following result:

It was already started, so maybe that is my problem. Out of curiosity I rebooted into the problem boot to see if the VSS service was still running, but it was stopped with the same 0x435 error.
How do I turn this service back on to auto start? (I don't remember switching it off, but I am a tinkerer!!) I looked in services.msc but it doesn't appear to be present.
Interestingly under "Turn Windows Features on or off", it states Internet Explorer 10 (which is ticked). Does it think it's already installed?

The VSS status actually normal, I think, if System Restore is switched off (I'd need to play a bit to check)
The exit code in this instance isn't an error, merely an information :)
It's quite possible that it does think it's installed....
What version do you get if you open IE, click on the cog in top right, and select About?

install Belarc Advisor www.belarc.com what does it have to say about updates and IE?

Yikes, I'll book some time off work!!

Seriously though, are these updates part of SP1 or do they cause a problem with installing SP1 if any are corrupt? SP1 installed fine as far as I can remember, and I generally have no problems with updates. I'm not at home currently, but I'll check to see if I have all the updates you posted later. Can I not just uninstall SP1 and start again?

I have some other quirks with my system, such as running IE (and FF) cache and temp files into a ramdrive. I also run user TMP and TEMP into the ramdrive, but NOT system TMP or TEMP.

It's important to know though, that the other boot on this machine is (apart from the SSD) near as damn it a mirror image of this one, and I had no problems installing IE10 on that.

If you could say what it is you want me to do, I'll oblige.

Thanks for your help and patience, Roo

No - you're looking in the wrong places for the KB numbers - ignore the download catalog entries in search engines, and use the filter site:support.microsoft.com which will get you much better results...

Your search then becomes site:support.microsoft.com KB2506212 - Google Search

and you can pick the one at the top :)

What I meant by my earlier post is that the method - not that you need to remove SP1 - of removing the updates showing that error, then reinstalling them, worked in that case, and may work in this.

I'm still trying to find an alternative solution that looks reasonable.

OK, I'm about half way through uninstalling the updates you've listed (joy!), I've disabled traffic on my firewall so they won't just reinstall, what do you want me to do when I'm finished?

I normally have updates configured so that they download but ask me what to install, should I change that to install automatically so it does them in the right order?

Anything else?

No - please leave updates to install only on command

Once you've finished the list, run a new SFC /SCANNOW and post the CBS.log file
Also run another CheckSUR scan and post the CheckSUR.log file (which I expect to be clear)

do a manual check for updates and we'll see where we are.

IE11/12/Edge/Chrome/FF(if I must)
Right, finished uninstalling, a couple of them (KB2676562 & KB2753842) took about an hour each to get past the "Preparing to Configure Windows - Do Not Switch off Computer" screen. I thought it had crashed the first time, good job I left it alone!!

I re-ran the surt and sfc /scannow, cbs file attached. I had a quick scan through the cbs.txt, there don't seem to be any errors, but I don't exactly know what I'm looking for.

I'll do a manual update in the morning, do you want me to actually install anything yet, or wait until you've had a look at the logs?

I did a manual update search, and have attached two .txt files, optional and important, which lists the updates (obviously under these categories) that Windows wants to install.

I haven't actually installed anything yet.

Interestingly a good proportion of the updates are ones dealing with remote access security issues. My firewall is now blocking traffic again!!

Hi Noel,

Sorry to pester, I realise you're probably busy and thanks for all the effort so far, just wondering what I should do now.
