I don't know if anybody's ever encountered this, but occasionally my 'back' button looks like a sun that getting ready to set. If I close all the tabs and reopen IE, everything is fine. Many times it's accompanied by my normal Start Button being replaced by a by a white square labeled Start.

As you can see I've got the sun setting Back Button, although my Start Button is still normal looking. I have run Malwarebytes and it found nothing.

Is this at all familiar to any of you august folk?

Hi and nope,
See what this does,
Use No Add-ons mode/ Click the Start button and type in the search box,
Internet explorer
View attachment 357116
Click on the suggestion (No Add-ons) or it’s located at,
Start/ All programs/ Accessories folder/ System tools folder/ No add-ons.

If using ie10 the first link will apply to ie9 as well,

Activate EPM if on a 64 bit version of windows,

Add the Run box to the Start menu list,

Open the Run command and Paste this into it and Okay,
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

You've lost me a little. And some of that is my fault - if I have IE11 open with 3 tabs and I open another tab, that tab will open with only the top half of the Back button visible - just like the other 3 tabs. If, however I click the Start button, click All Programs and click Internet Explorer, a new IE11 window will open to my home page, and with the Back button completely visible. So, of course if I open IE with no add ons it will also open in a new windows with the Back button displaying normally.

You then posted several links that referenced IE10 and IE9. Hence my confusion. I also did not turn on Enhanced Protected Mode, wanting to see if my paragraph above made you want to go in a different direction.

All of those articles apply to ie11 as well it's essentially not a lot different besides more bugs as you've found out,
using no add-ons mode with all prior open windows closed is the suggestion I'm making not an additional windows on top of the messed up ones ;)
Close all browser windows and try it again only using no add-ons mode.

If all works post images of your add-ons pages,
Click the Gear symbol on the top right and Manage add-ons,
On the top left column click on Toolbars and extensions
On the bottom left column click on Show and switch it to Show all add-ons,
Take screen shots of the lists,

You can also use the link above my signature to Fill in your system spec's page,
Add which security you use as well,
Cheers

It's pretty much impossible to keep my system specs current, since I have so many computers. This one happens to a 64 bit HP G62 Notebook running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 with 3 GB of RAM. I'm using Security Essentials.

As I already said, closing all the tabs and reopening IE11 always returns the Back button to it's normal appearance

Yep you have said that unfortunately to Trouble shoot your issue you need to start fresh using No add-ons mode and surf to see if the issue repeats

The add-ons pages show a lot of add-ons enabled,
Most troubling is all of the Oracle ones = Java
I'm not too worried about the Microsoft add-ons but All third party add-ons need to be disabled to properly test.

MSE isn't the best a-v it needs a real time protection Malware utility especially if you have Java and flash add-ons installed.

But also Open ie and use Gear symbol on the top right and Internet options/ Advanced section/ Check the top box to use Software rendering instead of gpu rendering/ Apply and Okay.
Close ie,
Restart using no add-ons mode and test.
