Firstly i will apologise as a bit of a nub when it comes to explaining things so please bare with me.

My PC had an issue with corrupted files a few days back which i was able to delete and did a system restore to the earliest available point, i logged into IE to find all my favorites had disapeared which i thought odd but not the end of the world.

I then attempted to add them back manually as no back up (silly me) but everytime i added something it asked if i wanted to add it with a (2) example: Ebay (2). this seems to show that IE still recognises my favorites even though none show and my folder under users is empty.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Go into C:\Users\(user)\Favorites and see what's in there, that's where IE stores bookmarks.

It's hard to say if it's a problem with Windows Explorer or with IE. You could try to reset IE8: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset... That won't delete any Favorites but should fix IE if that is where the problem lies.

Apologies, I guess I missed that part.
Reseting IE means losing and and all accelerators and extensions you may have installed, but it is definitely the best way to start; in fact, if I remember correctly, when reseting IE you have the option to remove all personal settings.

At first I would suggest not to use that option and just see if the bookmarks appear again. If not, reset again and make sure that you DO remove all personal settings, then see how it goes.
