This is driving me crazy today!
I'm trying to review the simple changes I'm doing a web site.
IE8 just can't finish building the index page.
Opera, Safari, FF, Chrome, & IE 8 on other machines, NO PROBLEM.
My primary machine is X64 so I'm convinced it is some kind of conflict or something between the two versions.
I have tried a bunch of "fixes" including but not limited to....

The follwowing CMD via Admin.
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
plus a few others I can't now remember

Plus...
Reset IE settings
Start IE under clean boot
Delete all cache, and temp files
uninstall Flash & re-install

HELP please !

Hi Pdxireland,

A few of thoughts:

  • Have a look at your Antivirus software, there's often plugins or specific settings for internet explorer (and not for the other browsers). Try disabling any av toolbars or changing the settings that interact with IE. Also check that the AV you use supports IE8 and Win7. Especially check if they support IE8 64bit if you are using that on your 64bit box.
  • Disable all installed toolbars one a time, testing between disables to see if one of them is the cause.
  • If you have a 64bit OS, download and install the 64bit IE8. You could also try the 32bit version and see if it has the same problem (I just checked and I seem to have both installed).
Good luck and let me know how you go!

Thanks for the advice.
I'm MSE so I figure that is OK
I have a very stripped down IE install no extra anything except Flash & Shockwave.
Do you mean IE toolbars?....I have no others installed!
I have both 64 & 32 installed but how do I know which one is launching?

Sorry I meant 'Addons' - From Tools | Manage Addon's Menu. I'd like to think that Microsofts own AV would play nicely with IE8. I've heard nothing to the contrary, but you never know.

Check the addon's anyway and disable one at a time. Close IE8 inbetween tests and check on task manager to ensure that the iexplorer process is not running, before you reopen it and run the test. To get to task manager, right click on the taskbar and start it.

The 64bit version of IE8 can only be installed on a 64bit ersion of windows. To see which version of IE8 you are running:

  • Click on the start globe and then click on all programs. If you have both the 32bit and 64bit version of IE8 installed, they will both show (see pic). FYI - the shortcut path to the 64bit version will be "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" while the 32bit version is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe".
To see which version of windows you are running:
  • Right click on computer and select Properties, look under System Type.

Richc, thanks for the info, UGH, just will not have time to deal with this fix until next week.

Tim, I know I have Windows Pro x64 & I know I have both 32 & 64 IE but how do you know which version of IE you are using when?

I must say I really like Chrome, except those few sites where it acts funny, like some CMS systems web back ends.

The joy never stops!

If I understand correctly, you're saying that you don't know which version of IE8 you are using once it's open.... so... open task manager while you have IE8 open, it will tell you which version you are using. If it's a 32bit version and on your 64bit box, it will have 32bit written after it in processes tab, if not it will just say iexlorer.exe. Hope this helps. Normally you can set either to be your default browser (as if they are two separate browsers). FYI - The same goes for WMP.

Chrome - Me too, same feelings.

Chrome vs. IE 8

Tim,

If I could I would just use Chrome.
I need IE8 to test the appearance of web work like I do Safari, Opera, & FF.
Need IE for some CMS & Plesk & MS Exchange/Company web access.
They all do have their own issues.
I mean FF & some higher end Flash/PHP integration is a problem.
IE as we have discussed.
Opera, not as much experience w/ this....seems OK?
To early in the day for a Whiskey.

Thanks for all the help & time.
To fix this right now is probably just not worth the time?
This being the case I'm just going to live with this until my next clean W7x64 install.
I plan to do this when I see the perfect deal on the perfect SSD!
Again, thanks so much for your time.
