IE8 Wont Save Passwords

I don't know where to put this, but can someone tell me why the heck this stupid 7/ie8 WILL NOT SAVE PASSWORDS AND LOG IN'S?

Please tell me there is a solution for this.

Where are you trying to save passwords / usernames / etc? If you're on an SSL site and it's a forms-based login on the page, it won't work, period - by design. If you're having trouble in username/password form fields on non-SSL sites, that's a different story. It could still be by design (there are page attributes that can disallow this), but it can also be a problem with your autocomplete or credential cache in IE8 at least - if it's a forms-based logon on a web page, it would be autocomplete. If it's a Windows dialog, that's credman (and has nothing to do with IE).

So, which is it? Also, this probably belongs in the browsers section, for what it's worth.

All I know is every site I have always gone to now makes me sign in every single time. Seems kind of stupid to design it that way. What, now I have to keep a paper cheat sheet for the hundreds of places I go?

And feel free to move it to the right place.

There is! IE PassView - Password Manager Program for Internet Explorer
There are two links to the free download near the bottom of the page just above the flash ad. One is .zip other is .exe. Either one will work (save the file and install the .exe). If a website won't ask to save your login information, just run IEPassView and look at the list for the website in question. Delete all references to it in the IEPassView window. The next time you log in to the website IE should ask about saving the login stuff. (When downloading the latest version, I noticed my Microsoft Security Essentials blocked it so I had to say "allow" to continue with the download.)

I'm going to leave FF and go to 7 and try that.
But it is asking for my user name and pass words, it's just not saving them. Stay tuned!

So the big red warning not to open it is false?? I have Kaspersky but it didn't warn me about it.

Those two sentences sound contradictory. Where did the "big red" come from if not your antivirus? Anyway here is a discussion about false positives that can happen with many useful utilities: Antivirus companies cause a big headache to small developers.

Oh I see. I got the same warning and thought it was due to Microsoft Security Essentials since that is my anti-virus. But if you don't have MSE it must be built in to Windows Security Center. In any case, I clicked the "Disregard...(not recommended)" option. It's the false positive the link I provided above discusses. BTW, of course it "reveals your personal information"...that's what it's supposed to do to show you your passwords so you can manage them.

Well, I got it installed after a bit of panic when kaspersky threw the yellow warning at me, but , I can't figure out how it works.

I'm gonna slink back to FF and lick my wounds for a while.

Think of the title "IEPassView". It lets you view what IE has saved from your previous logins. If it displays nothing, there is nothing to do. If it displays the correct username and password you want for a specified site to which you want log in automatically, there is still nothing to do. But if the info displayed is wrong or incomplete (e.g. no password shown) you simply delete the line for that website. The next time you log in with IE you will once again see the IE dialog about saving the password and if you are sure it's correct and you want IE to remember it say "yes".

Hi, me again.

Much as I appreciate your help, that pass view thing wasn't doing it for me.

I found out that Last Pass is not just a FireFox add-on, they have it for IE too.

Just thought I would pass that along.
