IE9 beta crashes

Hi,

First post

I installed Internet Explorer 9 public beta on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. It installed correctly, rebooted but when I start IE (both 32 and 64 bit) I can see a window open but it closes immediately.

What annoys me the most about this is that there are no event errors whatsoever .

Can anyone help with this? Maybe I can enable logging or do something else useful in an attempt to find out whats bugging it out?

Thanks.

I Found a Fix

I am running Win7 x64. The regular version of IE9 beta crashed for me just like you. However, if I ran the 64-bit version instead of the 32-bit everything works perfect.

This isn't going to work for you. However, it may work for other people so I thought I should post it.

If IE9 is crashing immediately on startup, it's likely an add-on that's causing it. If you run iexplore -extoff, does it load properly?

Thanks for the replies.

iexplore -extoff doesn't fix it.

I think however I know why this is happening for me. I changed the default program files path to D:\... I know this can lead to problems for some updates or MS programs and I normally change it back before updates like this. I forgot to change it back this time around though.

I can't uninstall it and a reinstall is rejected so it looks like I'm stuck with this unless someone knows how to do either of those?

Cheers.

Thx, and it was as I suspected.

I uninstalled, changed the paths back to default and reinstalled. It now works like a charm.

I am running Win 7 64 bit. Getting the same "soon as it opens up it crashes to desktop". Is there a crash reporting system in IE9 that I may be able to look at and give me a clue as to why this is happening? Installed to C:\ initially.

Quick update: I disabled all of the in IE8, removed IE9 and tried to reinstall. This time the IE9 page loaded, then, the same thing happened. Subsequent attempts to open IE9 did as before.

If you go to start > all programs > accessories > system tools you will find an Internet Explore (no add-ons) icon. It's the 32 bit version IE because that is what the default is. It's worth a try, it didn't work for me, IE 9 x32 still crashed with a "A problem has prevented this program from working" message. That might not be the exact message but its close. The 32 bit beta worked OK for me for a while. I had a problem where the "View Downloads" menu option didn't work. I did a "Reset Internet Explorer settings" and it never worked again. I un-installed and then re-installed, and it didn't fix it. I even did a system restore but IE 9 crashed again while i was browsing the Java update website and went back to the A problem... message and then just closes. I ended up un-installing and going back to IE 8.

Thanks for the very thorough response. Since this issue came up for me, I have seen on several other forums others that are having similar issues. Right now I think I will let IE9 "mature" a bit. Just doesn't appear to me, at least, that it is ready for prime time. I too have sucessfully gone back to IE8 and all is well again.
