2010 will be remembered as the year when Chrome took off despite Microsoft's attempts to hold on to its shrinking browser market share. It looks like Internet Explorer's two months of market share gains were an aberration. Other trends are continuing as before: Firefox is steady between 20 and 25 percent share, Chrome is steadily moving forward, and Safari trudges onward. Opera, meanwhile, is still hanging on to the leftover scraps. Everyone but Microsoft saw at least a modest market share gain in September.

Between August and September, Internet Explorer dropped 0.75 percent, a drop bigger than the last three months. Firefox, meanwhile, went up a mere 0.03 percent. Chrome gained 0.46 percent, making it the biggest winner this month. Safari was up 0.11 percent and Opera grabbed another 0.02 percent.

IE has managed to fall back below the 60 percent mark. At 59.65 percent, this is the lowest point for the Microsoft browser. This drop comes despite the overwhelming monthly gains of IE8 and the release of the Internet Explorer 9 beta right in the middle of September. Microsoft told Ars that the beta has been downloaded 6 million times in the last two weeks. Nevertheless, this translates to a mere 0.25 percent of the whole market for those two weeks, and when looking at the whole month of August, it's only 0.10 percent. We might see more progress in October.

Unfortunately for Web developers everywhere, IE6 (15.55 percent) continues to be more popular than IE7 (10.39 percent), though this month its share declined more than its successor. IE6's share can be attributed to businesses still using customized intranet applications, and XP's much bigger installed base compared to Vista's (especially in developing countries). We expect that IE7 will drop below the 10 percent mark next month, while IE6 may finally fall under 15 percent.

Once IE9 comes out of beta the market share will most likely improve. It's a bit disheartening to see over 15% of the market is still using IE6 considering all the vulnerabilities.

It may help when the final version comes out because the IE9 beta is simply terrible, crashing, locking up, copy and paste is simply horrible, and the flash player functionality is a joke, so many things I see wrong with this beta it's just unreal.

The problem with IE9, and MS should consider changing this, is that I know ALOT of people that WILL NOT give up XP until support stops on it. IE9/MS is going to lose some points there.

Microsoft posted a timetable of Windows XP's support lifecycle. They can't just suddenly change when to stop supporting XP; it would make them look bad.

I would bet most of the IE6 market is due to large enterprises that can't use IE7 or later

For me is just Firefox.

IE wish you down... :geek:

What I meant Klaw is that they should consider IE9 for XP.

IE 9 Beta.

I've been using IE 9 Beta for almost 3 weeks now with no problems at all. I like the new layout and the new helpful Download method. I would however like a simple 'add to Favorites' icon; there may be one but I've been unable to find it so far.
Well worth a try and for me perfectly stable.

What I meant Klaw is that they should consider IE9 for XP.
In that case, they probably did, but the way XP works makes it impossible for IE9 to work on XP. Why? Because IE9 requires hardware acceleration, which XP lacks support for. Even in Firefox Nightly and Chrome Canary Builds, hardware acceleration can only be done on Vista or 7.

How is this even relelant... IE9 is still in beta.

I will say iv been using it since the day it released and have had none of the problems some of you are saying you have.

It has worked flawless for the exception of a few minor things (like selecting searches from dropdown box doesnt always work). So maybe im just having good luck or maybe the system its running on is related to some of the problems.

btw, its the also the fastest browser iv ever used!

Hi Echrada. Thanks for that; I do use that method but not having Favorites open all the time means needing to do so and that,s why I would have preffered them to include the previous 'Gold Star Icon' method.
Who knows, they may just include it when the completed IE9 is issued.

Regular IE9 (and Chrome) user here ;)

Appart from the obvious flash issues with 64Bit there's nothing wrong with it. The main issue is that a lot of users are not going to use BETA software due to possible security issues. Once it's officially out of the BETA stage it'll no doubt pick up again :)

Those that openly flame IE should just be happy with the browsers you use, don't try to dishearten people who may be willing to give IE9 the time of day :roflmao:
