A report indicates that Internet Explorer 9 does more to protect you from socially engineered malware than any other browser.

According to an independent security research and testing organization, Internet Explorer 9 blocks up to seven times more socially engineered malware than other browsers.

Testing carried out by NSS Labs showed that Microsoft’s SmartScreen continues to offer industry-leading protection against socially engineered malware.

What I always find funny, is that often times average users get hit with all kinds of malware, viruses and trojans...and these average users often just run IE because that is what is already installed on the box. But lots of techies and enthusiasts who insist on using other browsers for their extra security don't seem to have issues.

It just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

I honestly don't think it is Internet Explorer browser that is the problem it is the way these uneducated and or willfully ignorant users use the PC and the internet.

You can't stop people from being idiots if they are DETERMINED to be so.

If you click on anything and everything YOUR COMPUTER WILL GET INFECTED SOONER OR LATER, BUT MOST LIKELY MUCH SOONER!:sarc:

But if IE9 is so powerful in blocking malware, how do these average normal users get so much of it? I don't expect an exact answer, it just puzzles me.

I would bet that even after they are warned, they insist on clicking on dangerous links, ect. I know that sometimes IE will warn a person about a potentially dangerous site or link and ask ...do you want to proceed? Yes or no?

I'm sure that even the best malware protection isn't invincible to determined "geniuses" who insist on clicking that link to the latest porn or celeb stuff.

I use the term "genius" liberally since that other competing OS uhhh X has people working in their stores that are called "geniuses" too but also aren't really too bright unless it is charging a purchase of some iCrap.

Yes this is what I read on Zdnet.com. I usually don't use IE9 as I find it slower compare to my favorite browser Chrome. But the report is showing some interesting about the security in most common browser.
Is there anyone who daily uses IE9 which can confirm this result?

Because people ignore warnings. The (well observed) phenomenon of people on IE getting more malware is probably down to as you said, more down to people who don't know anything about computers use IE rather than the security of the browser itself. Not that there is anything wrong with IE... I'm just saying that most people who don't know enough not to fall for this crap are using it.

Lets assume hypothetically that report is accurate, all that the higher numbers do, is offset the huge amounts of idiots who click crap. 4% of 70% market share is still alot after all. This is why IE gets targeted.

This is true about uneducated using, using the internet it doesn't matter what browser they use they will still get into as much trouble. Browser engineers are never going to be able to stay quite ahead of the bad guys but they can prevent most things by behavior. The bottom line is I spend a lot of time fixing friends computers just because they click on every damn thing they see even after I tell them not too. So education is the key but that still not going to solve the issue for most idiots lol.

I have used IE for long time as main browser and its OK.. the main reason for infection is user not browser.
