Solved IE9 Bug

Win7u 64. When browsing, I often create shortcuts to web pages by dragging the icon from the address bar to the folder or right pane of an open instance of Windows Explorer.

Since upgrading to IE9 (via WU), whenever I do this, a new instance of IE opens to the site for which I'm creating the shortcut. This happens in both 64 bit and 32 bit IE. It doesn't happen in Firefox.

I'm not aware of this being a 'feature', but one never knows. Is anyone familiar with this behavior?

Hello James,

Yeah, this is part of the new pinning websites feature in IE9. It's suppose to create a new IE9 window like that. The NOTE box at the bottom of OPTION ONE in the tutorial below is about the best that I can explain.

I find that creating a internet shortcut using OPTION TWO in the same tutorial below, or right clicking on the webpage and clicking on "Create shortcut" do not do this though. They behave like the old shortcut use to still.

Thanks for the info. It does strike me as odd that MS would launch a new instance of a site already open, though. Fortunately, as you've pointed out in your tutorial, the IE9 pinning aspect can be turned off, which turns off the annoyance . Nice work there...I downloaded the reg and took note of the GPedit fix. Thanks!

Hello again, Shawn.
Another 'discovery' about pinned items. If I drag a shortcut from the IE9 address bar to a folder, the new IE window opens up as previously discussed here, but rather than the shortcut type being "Internet Shortcut", it's now classified as a 'Pinned Site Shortcut', even though not pinned (as per screenshot).

Adding to the Favorites Bar or right-clicking on the page and choosing 'Create Shortcut on Desktop' classifies as Internet Shortcut. It seems that dragging the link from the address bar to any location is considered a Pinned Site, even if it's not pinned. Not problematic, but a bit inconsistent to the concept.

I prefer to either have them in Favorites, or just manually create the internet shortcuts to avoid that whole pinned issue.
