I just upgraded to IE9 for IE8. On a work website there's a button I click to convert the data on the web page to an Excel file. In IE8 when I clicked that link, the new Excel file would open on in that same tab. This is the preferred option because I copy and paste info from that file into an Excel file that's already open in a seperate window.

In IE9 when I click that link, the new Excel file opens on top of the Excel file that's already open.

How do I make IE9 open an Excel file in the existing tab and not on top of my open Excel file?

Have you looked in IE settings, under tab settings to see how links are opened.

Yes, I've tried those options. I get that stupid Do you want to open or save pop-up either way, choose open and it opens in my Excel instance.

It Is There

When you open an excel file while already having one open it becomes the file displayed. The other file is still there.
If that is what is happening in your case and you want to see them both do this. In Excel click view and on the resultant tool bar click view side by side.

I think I understood your post. If not forty lashes for me.

Just read post #4 which appeared while I was posting. That sounds like a good resolution. The one in this post gives a side by side. (Office 2010 Excel) You may prefer the registry hack.
