I'm hoping IE9 is a great browser. I'd doubt it would make me switch from Opera, as it is the best browser for me. Acid and peacekeeper tests are nice, but when I give it the A Guy test, that's when I decide

I have a 3.2GHz Core 2 Quad, 4GB DDR2 and 15Mbps down for internet access. At no point is any browser not fast.

The only thing that hardware acceleration does is do 2D rendering on the graphics card. The only point that it would make a difference is if you were using something like an Intel Atom CPU. Otherwise, the difference will be negligible to the human eye.

Because they decided to write code specifically to an artificial and unsanctioned, random trest designed by a guy according to his personal interpretation of the very interpretable standards?

Acid 3 is not any kind of official web body standard test by any means.

It's just one of potentially thousands of tests that people could randomly come up with and wheather or not a browser developer group decides to specifically code to pass the test or not depends on what they think they are going to get out of doing so.

ha - adding to what fseal said, it doesn't really matter if you prove it (assuming you were refering to the 100/100 score.) Acid 3 ain't the be-all, end-all for browser testing. It's about as superficial as you can get, but for some reason people still think it's got serious clout.

I would also add that Acid3 wasn't written by just some guy. It was written by some guy who works at Google. Gee, I wonder what browser came out on top when Acid3 was released?

Acid 3 may not be an all encompassing test, but it is quite valid, and it was not created just for Chrome. It was around before Chrome ever twinkled an eye. The fact that a Google employee was one of the developers (Acid 2), doesn't invalidate it, and it has become a standard:

Correct. Acid 3 isn't like an official W3C test or anything, but it's certainly well-respected and accurate. Just because it's not an "official" standard doesn't mean it's totally ineffective.

That said, it shouldn't be considered the sole determinant of what browser is best either.

Actually, it's TOO all-encompassing. I didn't say it was created for Chrome. I didn't say the test was invalid because it was developed by a Google employee. I'm just saying that in the grand scheme of things it's a superficial test that crams in a bunch of things at once. The scores don't mean anything for most users, and in certain ways (not all) they're almost (not totally) irrelevant in real-world conditions.

Chrome did great when Acid3 came out. Best of the bunch. Who made Acid3? A Google employee. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I'm not claiming Acid3 was built for Chrome. But I'm also not going to pretend the two events are 100% unrelated. On the other hand, I don't care if they are totally related. Chrome did great on the Acid3 test? Big whoop. I like Chrome a lot and it ain't because of the Acid3 test.

What exactly is Acid a standard for, anyway? The absolute maximum a browser can do? Or what the overall standards the web should adhere to, and how a vast majority of users actually use browsers?

Granted, these issues were when Acid3 came out. With these new browsers I don't know if the same criticisms apply - unless there's n 4 on the horizon and it just continues the same philosophy of 3.

Browsers are free, you download and you try them. If it's the fastest, but you didn't like it, it's not the best for you. If anyone only wants the Pied Piper browser, good for them. I'm sporting Opera, often not even tested in these articles. Passed my test. Then again, I have FF and IE 8 too, so there is always choice. Tried Chrome, too plain for me...haven't seen the skinability test results yet A Guy

I call BS. I ran the Aid 3 test on Chrome when the first public build came out. It did better than SeaMonkey, but it did worst than Firefox. I think the score was in the 60s or 70s. Also, Acid 3 came out in March 08, the first beta of Chrome did not become available until September, and the final build was not done until December. In both of your post, you claim Acid 3 came out after Chrome. Don't know where you are getting your info from, but you are wrong on both counts. I actually just ran the test on Chrome. I got 100/100, but the image does not display right. EDIT: running Chrome 5.0.375.99.

Personally, I don't care how great IE9 turns out to be. I really like the way Chrome functions, whether its the fastest browser or not. I don't think IE9 will end up having the same options, so I will stick with what I have for the time being.
