It was only a matter of time, after all, but according to Microsoft estimates, Internet Explorer 9 could move into the runner-up position to its predecessor IE8 as the top browsers on Windows 7 in terms of usage share.

Roger Capriotti, director, Internet Explorer Marketing reveals that the number of Windows 7 users relying on IE9 will get closer to those running IE8 as early as November 2011.

Capriotti is basing the conclusion on the evolution of browser usage according to statistics from NetMarketshare.

“It’s looking to be a good Halloween for developers. Windows 7 share continues to climb, and as early as next month, IE9 on Windows 7 could be the leading modern browser behind IE8,” Capriotti explained.

I use IE 9, but if someone used IE 8 I'd recommend they upgrade to anything, regardless if it's IE or not.

Used to be a Firefox user too, but once IE7 came out, it only got even better. For the sake of it though, I still have the latest versions of Firefox, Opera, and Safari; which I all use once in a while.

I would be driven completely bonkers if this were my case. I may on a rare occasion find need for 2 browsers, but more and I can only see clutter.

But safari is pretty useless for a windows based computer isn't it, as it lacked the speed of chrome, and the safety of firefox and IE? Its just ugly and makes me feel boxed in. o.0

Only opinion folks, everyone prefers different

The main reason I went back to IE8 after upgrading to IE9 is because some smartass at MS decided to remove the Search Engine bar. That bar is so useful when I'm not sure if I typed a word correctly.

But... the search bar is integrated with the adress bar, just type in whatever you want to look for, it will process your query as the old search bar did before ;)

BTW, I also use IE9... not tat often as I do with Firefox (which is getting bulkier with every version...), but IE9 is really good, fast and safe... my only complain should be the lack of complements, lke the AdBlock Plus for firefox, it could be a great addition for IE9, tat could even make me switch to IE9 completely.

IE's add-on site is confusing, I think if microsoft spent more time and effort into that area (adding more add-ons; making it more user-friendly), it would gain a lot more positive reviews and even more people would switch to it.

He's right, and I think that makes it even better. You can choose your own search provider (google is popular, bing is the one that comes with the browser). There are internet options settings which effect wether or not IE 'guesses' what you are searching for, i.e. spelling suggestions

Problem is, it doesn't have a drop down box like the old search bar. Searching on Google for example, if I wanted to know if I spelled Mississippi correctly there would be a drop down box as I type, that is not available with IE9

There are SO MANY THINGS wrong with searching from the address bar.

It really is a disaster of a UI concept. There is no search history, you can't switch search engines in the middle of a search, once you go to a web page your search term is wiped out and you need to type it in again if you want to change the spelling or add terms...

I can forsee IE10 putting it (the dedicated search window) back touting a great improvement to searching as a "new" feature now that we have hit rock bottom of functionality in that area in all browsers :/

Hi there
Sometimes and it's only very rarely a website doesn't render well with one browser but works with another -this is often due to problems with the site rather than the browser per se.

I agree 99% of the time it doesn't seem to make any sense in using more than one browser --except during testing phases to see which one you like or you want the tiniest one you can find for s "stripped down" version of R7 --Opera is good for this purpose.

BTW not sure what you mean --IE10 has both a drop down for the address bar and a search engine bar where you can type your questions --so unless I've mis-understood something --

Note I'm using IE10 in the "non invasive" i.e in the classical nom metro_UI mode.

screenshot from IE10 in W8

cheers

Well, personally I love the combo address/search bar. Those Drop down boxes annoy me to no end on ANY browser too. First thing I turn off. I use IE 9 but only when I have to as my Browser of choice is Opera, closely followed by Chrome. I do have both installed and use Chrome because the game I play on facebook seems to like it a tad better than Opera. The only time I fire up IE9 is when I go to my V.A. Health site as it will only accept either it or F.F. (its a real pain in the behind to fill out a whole page of questions ,hit enter and be told that "it appears you have an unsupported browser". So far though that and one other site I frequent are the only ones I have any trouble with at all. Been using Opera for years now and Chrome since I started the fb game a couple of months ago.
But since this thread/topic is IE9 I must say that , to me, its the top of the heap as far as Microsoft browsers are concerned. But at the end of the day, your browser of choice is just that,CHOICE. Whatever you want/need/feel comfortable with is the browser for you.

different ones have different features, security, speed, etc. Google to find out more, or ask questions here on this forum
