The new 2013 Nexus 7 seems to be the ultimate price/performer. I own last years Nexus 7 and am very happy with it. But maybe I'll give it to the kids and get this new model.

I bought the new Nexus 7 (typing on it now) and gave the old one to my daughter.

The new one is noticeably faster and has a gorgeous screen. No regrets here.

If I was in the market I would certainly choose this tablet. I've been fond of my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (well, since the ICS update, anyways) and the microsd slot is certainly a big part of that. But now with so many wireless external memory devices hitting the market, it's a little less of a concern.

Yeah, the screen is what I would be interested in. Since I don't see very well, that should help.

I had the GTAB2 7.0 before my original Nexus 7 and really liked it but liked the N7 even better. I did miss the microsd card slot of the GTAB, especially since my N7 was an 8G model. I have a Kingston Wi-Drive 16G and a Seagate Wireless 1TB that more than satisfy my storage needs so when I bought my new N7 I went with the 16G instead of spending the additional money for the 32G model.

Both the new and original N7's work fine with an OTG cable to be able to use external devices like sd card readers, thumb drives and powered USB hdds which also lessens the need for the microsd card slot.

I believe the reason why Google doesn't want to provide a microsd card slot is because they want you to purchase streaming content from Google Play, the same reason why Amazon does not provide a microsd card slot on their Kindle Fire tablets.

As much as I like it, I always just put buying it off every month.

The new one looks great. And even more so when Android 4.3 comes with TRIM support, finally. Considering all the problems the previous Nexus 7 had.

I think you are absolutely correct, and I think the same could be said of Apple and their iTunes and iCloud.
I never even thought of one of those OTG cables, to be honest.....that's a clever solution too.

It's also to push you up to buying the next model.

For example, there's the 16GB Nexus 7 model without an SD card slot. For more internal space, the only option now is to purchase the 32GB for an extra £50. The kick in the balls with it is that it only costs Google an extra £5 to manufacture the model 32GB model over the 16GB...

I'm glad I didn't wait since I had the use of my N7 since last year.

I read an article (sorry don't have link) that stated that, once updated to Android 4.3, the original N7 will support the TRIM command as well. Both of the original N7's in our house have already received the 4.3 update.

If I was looking for tablets I would get an Xperia Z tablet. It's probably the only good looking tablet on the market that is certified to resist water submersion (up to one meter deep for up to 30 minutes) and dust, IP55/57 standards.
Had to fix too much devices that were killed by water/liquid spills and had to open too much devices to clean the inside of the screen or whatever as it got dusty to settle for less.

It has a good 10'' screen, and Sony has been supportive towards XDA and custom ROM developers (heck it's probably the only company apart from Google that allows you to unlock bootloader without hacking the phone), providing sources for stuff and whatnot, so there are already decent tweaked ROMs in case the stock ROM has issues or sucks.

The 16 GB wifi version costs around twice the Nexus 7 (it has MFT, a IR led to be used as a remote for TVs or whatever, and a mini-sd slot so internal storage isn't a major issue), but I can't stand less than 10" screens anyway on a media-consumption device.

TRIM support is added by Android 4.3, so any device that gets updated to Android 4.3 will have it.

It's just that Nexus tablets are the first to receive 4.3, and only newest devices will be updated to 4.3 anyway, apart from the ones that are reflashed by users with custom ROMs (based on 4.3) from XDA or whatever, of course. (as explained here, and confirmed here)

I've never looked at these type of tablets. To me they appear to be a large smartphone without the phone. Am I missing something? I rooted my Fire HD with CyanogenMod (Android). Getting rid of the Amazon bloatware makes the Fire much faster and responsive. I'll have to check out the new Nexus 7.

Just as a point of interest, my 1st gen Nexus 7 was updated to 4.3 OTA a few days ago, seems like google are "supporting" the older model - something that a majority of other suppliers appear to fail to do beyond the first update after purchase.

That is a big part of the appeal of the Nexus-branded devices.....they'll keep getting OS updates as long as the hardware can support them, and said updates will come as soon as available, unlike other Android devices tied into cell carriers. Carrier supplied devices not only can take a long time before the updates are delivered, but they, along with even wifi-only non_Nexus branded Androids, are often loaded up with bloatware. Examples: Samsung's Touchwiz, HTC's Sense.

Nexus devices are pure Android.....say no to bloatware!

My Nexus7 (old version) just got updated too. I let it sit idle for about an hour to give Trim a chance to cleanup the mess on the storage and now it seems to be a lot swifter. Good deal.

I had no doubt at all that the previous Nexus 7 wouldn't be updated to 4.3. I'd have been surprised if it wasn't. And I've had full use of one at work for software development, so had plenty of use of it.

My biggest problem with is though that the Tegra 3 chip in it isn't a suitable smartphone/tablet chip at all. I despise it. As nice as the Nexus 7 is to use and I think it's a great tablet (it's definitely the best tablet bar none in terms of bang for buck), I've just always felt it's been kept back from its full potential. Get a custom kernel on there that really opens up Tegra 3 and it'll most likely feel like a new tablet. And as the new one has jumped ship to Snapdragon, I'm looking forward to trying it.
