I was wanting to get a Windows 7 machine and being a hard core gamer I have read many posts about games like flightsim that don't work in the 64 bit environment, so I am thinking of abandoning the whole Windows machine idea if my 32 bit programs wont run or run poorly. I heard nothing but good about 7 untill I read the posts about all of the people are having, so it looks like XP for gaming?

Dual boot.

Test Win7 to determine exactly how wrong, or right, 'everyone' is.

Most of them are wrong.

So then for gaming just save my money and forget Windows and stay with XP then.

I want to play the following FS9/ FSX and Battle Field 2142 and with greater performance.

32-bit is oboslete and 64-bit problems are a myth - its poorly coded apps that don't work.

Until it’s gone it’s not obsolete! And 64-bit problems are not a myth! Unfortunately there are still vendors out there who have not fully supported the 64-bit OS for various reasons. Those are facts and not myths.

And yes, I'm using a 64-bit OS, however I do recognize that not everyone needs, or can run a 64-bit OS.

Facts, not myths ;)

Perhaps I did miss under stand, but dosen't Windows 7 have an XP mode that solves that problem?

To Clarify. Windows 7 does have a nifty XP mode that will allow older programs to run. HOWEVER....(to make a long story short) the aforementioned XP mode cannot fully use your video card (at least not enough for high-end games).

So you cannot use the XP mode for Serious Gaming.
My suggestion: Go with Win7 x64 and:
1. most games will play fine, most with small tweaks or patches
2. Other games might need some serious patches (or windows patches) to play properly. As more and more people go to Win7 x64 you will see these patches in the near future.
3. Dual Boot with XP. (for now)-- ONLY do this if you find you cannot play a must have game on Win7 x64.

Another Suggestion I have. It SEEMS like most of the problems (but not all) that people are having with games are when they do an "upgrade" (as opposed to a clean install).....And/or... they "keep" their old game folders and move them over to the new operating system (hoping to save their games and settings). It SEEMS like this causes a fair number of problems.
So... Just do a Clean Install of the games and start fresh.

The future is x64. It has been a long time coming, and now it is here. The game and hardware developers will be catching up soon enough.

AND...You gotta admit.... A nice clean install is....SEXY!!!
