Nah, you are not missing anything. I just think it looks nice on the dark background.

I use the high def on my little 11.6" laptop because else I could not read anything.

Meanwhile, back to the ranch... It appears the MR website was FUBARed. I just received the following reply from MR:

I'm sorry but we've had some technical problems with upgrades. Please can you re-enter your details on the upgrade page for the correct quotation:

When I checked, the upgrade to V6 for the Home 4 pk is only $69.95. That's reasonable. I am going to wait a bit in case there is an additional FUBAR like the one MBAM experienced with their new version. Besides, V5 has been working perfectly for me. I suppose I'll have to start lurking on the MR forums again to see what's going on.

The new Version 6 has its own forum at Macrium Support Forum.

The old Version 5 forum is at Macrium Support Forum.

You can lurk at both but can post only if you register with a valid license key for the version associated with the forum.

One thing I just read that is souring me on V6. Apparently, support is free for only one year; any more costs extra. That apparently includes the users' forums.

I am glad I got the free version when I did. I have both 32 bit & 64 bit stored on a flash drive. What so special about V6 compared to v5 just curious?

Just read the "what's new in v6" section down a bit on this page.

Note that I have 5.3.7277 64-bit of the non-free Standard version installed. As to whether any further updates will be coming for 5.3, I would think not.

Purchases of v5 from Nov 2014 and newer get an automatic "free upgrade" to v6, with replacement license keys that are for v6 (coupled with the automatic revocation of the older license keys for v5, so that the v5 product can no longer be installed with that old now-dead original v5 license key).

Purchases of v5 older than Nov 2014 do not have a "free upgrade" to v6, but must purchase an upgrade.

Existing installed non-free versions of v5 will obviously still work, and can also be reinstalled with the old installer file and the old license keys. I would guess 7277 will be the final version for non-free v5.

Well, that just bites my ample asset. I always thought the licenses for a particular version were free for life (you were just locked into that version).

I said that if you take advantage of the "free upgrade" they are offering for v5 -> v6 for purchases made in the past 3 months, then they're giving you v6 "for free". They are replacing your now obsolete v5 with a brand new v6, for free. Why would you care anymore about v5, since you just opted-in to their offer for a "free upgrade"?

If you'd rather stay with v5 and its old (but still valid) license key, then stay with it and don't take advantage of their free upgrade offer. The voiding of your v5 license key (so that you can no longer install v5 with this key) only happens if you tell them you want to upgrade to v6 in which case they send you a perfectly usable v6 key to use going forward with v6 software. V5 is dead to you.

Ok, I misunderstood you. I though you were referring to the V5 licenses if one didn't upgrade to V6.

I'm taking a wait and see approach to V6. First, V5 is working quite well for me. Losing support (including access to the V6 forum) after one year unless one pays extra is somewhat disturbing. Also, there are likely to be some initial bugs that will need to be worked out (remember the FUBAR with MBAM?). Then there is the fact I can't afford it until next month unless I dip into savings (something I'm very reluctant to do).

Personally i won't spend any money on a backup utility right now.
I'll probably upgrade a couple of OS's to Win 10 when that is released.
I'd want a product that works with the official Win 10 release.
I don't see any point in spending money now, and then again in less than a year.
My old Acronis paid has been working reliably for me for many years.
And Macrium free is working well for me.

You get a years free support with Macrium that will include any upgrade for Windows 10.

Here is the completely free option - works in 7 and 8.1. Have not tried 10 yet.

Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:X: -include:C: -AllCritical -quiet

X is your backup device.

Another free option would be to "stoke up" a Linux Distro and use the "dd" command.

I hoping my free versions 5.3-7277 will support W8.1 and W10. Also, I hope I can install on a new PC when required?? Perhaps they will eventually release a free version of V6.
