I currently have my input set to a Japanese IME keyboard, so alt-` switches back and forth between english and 日本語. Ive been noticing that the language seems to switch randomly alot of the time. Be typing english fine on one page, go to another, start typing.. look up and see 視lly ぎbbえrいsh(silly gibberish typed in the wrong language).

Very annoying, has anybody heard anything about this yet or a possible fix?

If you're anything like me you're probably doing it yourself without realizing it.

I constantly come back to windows where I was using japanese an hour ago, start typing expecting english, and get a big japanesey mess.

I also tend to hit alt-` randomly sometimes when I'm not paying attention or alt-tabbing. This is exacerbated by the fact i took off my english keyboard (you can type regular english perfectly fine with just the jap keyboard so why bother kepping another one, right?)

In short, pay special attention to when you're typing in kana and when you're typing in english and see if it's not just you. Try using the language bar too so you have a visual reference for which mode you're in.

For me this happens often, I'm using English, German and Finnish kb-layouts. I've noticed it's always my own fault because when I have for example been writing with German layout I just close the page or email program etc. when finished without first changing the kb-layout for that page back to my default Finnish kb.

Windows remembers what was the last layout used on that particular page and uses that next time I open it.

Its definitely not that. Just happened while I was watching game trailers. English the entire time, then im prompted to put my birthday to watch a video, and im inputting japanese in that textbox. I switch back and put in the date, and watch.

When its over I go to another video and have to put in my birthdate again, and again its Japanese.

Same here

I have the same problem, its not typing what i am when I am typing. It happened as soon as I upgraded to 7.

I have tried switching off the IME in regional settings and back again, but when I type now its still jibberish.

for example, pressing the exact keys

ha na shi

gets me

くちみちとくに

im not kidding thats exactly what I get with those keys.

help soon! I major in Japanese at uni and my only computer is now incapable of typing Japanese~~

The problem may only be with MS Word, which switches languages according to the context in which you are typing. I use several languages in the same text, and this happens all the time. In a sense, it is convenient for catching typing errors in several dictionaries, but it is annoying if you are working in a text that just needs to input Japanese from time to time.

Its not word. its across all software and hardware. even so the IME word uses is the windows IME. Word does not have its own special IME

Fixed

Everyone, I finally worked it out.
The problem is that the IME is set to Kana imput not Romanji input. IE its mimiking a Japanese keyboard.

To fix this, Go to Control panel > (in catagory view) change keyboards or other input methods > Keyboards and languages tab > Change keyboards

Click the japanese Microsoft IME and then the properties button.

Under the General Tab change the input method from Kana to Romanji and its fixed ^_^

Happy Typing everyone

Japanese IME stops working with June 11, 2010 update

This email thread was extremely valuable! The most recent Windows security update (June 11, 2010) is setting the Japanese IME keyboard input mode to kana instead of romanji so everyone with romanji as the default setting (like my Japanese wife) is sitting down at their computer this morning wondering why all that gibberish is coming out as they try to type in hiragana.

Many thanks for the fix!

Keyboard shortcut to switch Kana/Romaji-mode

Hi, this drove me crazy several times too as I didnt know how to switch back to Romaji input after accidentially switching to Kana input (the extra direct Hiragana-input on japanese keyboards).

If you have a japanese keyboard you can switch between both input modes with "Alt" + "Katakana/Hiragana"-Key shortcut. (Note: this was tested on XP)

But unfortunately its nowhere reflected in the language bar which icon changing. You see the difference only in the Properties menu described before or when you are starting to type...

At least I found it now and know how to get out of the Kana mess!
