Import Windows Mail to Outlook

Hi everyone!

I'm switching my Dad's PC over to Windows 7 from Vista and have run into a snag. I exported all of his Windows Mail e-mails into a folder on my USB drive. The e-mails are in .eml format. Additionally, I copied his contacts from Windows mail into another folder on my USB drive. They are all in .vcf.

I cannot seem to find a way to import the e-mails into Outlook 2007 since there is no Windows Mail on Windows 7. Additionally, I can't figure how to bulk import the contacts into Outlook 2007. It seems to want me to do them one at a time, but with over 300 contacts, that's a tedious task.

Anyone have any ideas on how best to proceed?

the eml format ones can be imported into Outlook Express if you still have a VM XP system or another machine (Laptop).

Then you can import the OE stuff directly into Outlook including contacts.

Go into your Dad's Outlook contacts list, highlight all of his contacts, click on Actions, and select Forward as vCard. That will put all of the contacts into one e-mail that can be sent to you, and later forwarded back to your Dad. You can send all of the vCards in one message, since they should average around 500 bits each. Once your Dad has that e-mail on the updated system, he can select all of the vCards simultaneously (Ctrl + A), then drag-and-drop them to the Contacts folder. That approach is better than using .csv, because you won't lose any information in the transfer.

I didn't read carefully enough, and don't know if you can send .vcf files by e-mail from Windows Mail. However, if you have those .vcf files on your hard drive, you can attach them to an e-mail and use the same approach described above for adding them back to Outlook on another machine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up just going the difficult route with the contacts. With the eml files, I ended up putting them into Windows Live Mail and then did the transfer. Took forever, but worked...I think.
