Solved Important update offered for wrong Office program

I was notified today of one important update, KB2881030, but checking shows this to be for the 32 bit version of Office 2010. I have only MS Office Home and Student 2007 on my 64bit computer. Further, the update has a prerequisite mentioned, i.e., Microsoft Office 2010, Service Pack 2, definitely not on my computer. Finally, the update's "more information" did not mention any files in Office 2007 that were involved. I won't install this update unless I learn I need it, but I'm wondering if there are others being offered this apparently inappropriate update. Anyone else involved?

What other office components do you have (those with the office symbol)? Any of them that are for 2010 will cause you to get 2010 updates even though you don't have office 2010 installed jut because M$ thinks that you "need" it. For example previously I got outlook updates and outlook junk filter updates even though I didn't have outlook installed just because I had office installed. On my servers (which don't have a full office product installed) I got the office updates because I have web components installed. If you have word or excel, or powerpoint viewers installed you will get the office 2010 updates.

Thanks for the reply! I do have Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 installed, so that probably explains the update being offered. I don't believe I've ever had Office 2010 updates before, though. Guess I'll go ahead with the update.

Yea I have office 2007 too I searched and did not have that update installed
Seems like a rather old kb# might want to hide it :/

I should have read more carefully, but I believe you are correct. I did examine the installed program list on this computer carefully, and I was unable to identify any of the web components, only the applications. The same update was offered on another computer here, however, which only has a couple of the MS viewers and no full applications installed. I installed the update on both computers, and it took about 30 seconds with no restart.

I just got a notification for this update on my Vista vm with office 07. The only thing I have other than office is the file validation add-in. I'm not sure if it is technically for office 2010. Can anyone else shed any light on this? ThrashZone this is not an old kb. It was released on 6/7.

KB288... seems old to me :/
M$ wouldn't usually go backwards in KB#
