ARe you going to get more ram? if not stay with 32bit. do you do alot of gaming? If so pc2. If not its a wash. Im not certain abt MS licensing but you might be able to install it on both. check with microsoft abt a laptop and desktop.

Hope this helps

Ken

Possibly in the future I'll go for 4 GB. :) And I play a lot of games. What would you suggest?

Iguess whichever PC you use the most should get W7. I'm not sure why people have more than one PC unless you have multiple user at home. But if it was me I'd throw all my resources into one PC.

It looks your dual-core PC has the better graphics card. why not put the quad in there? afaik it has 1066 MHz FSB and easily runs at 1333 FSB bringing the clock speed to that of the dual core? I'm sure newer games use multiple cores.

Because I usually upgrade every 2-3 years. And once upgraded, the old PC is hardly junk...just not the best anymore. So, I keep the old one around for various testing, give to the kids to play with, etc.

but he has 2 PCs that are almost comparable in power (high clock dual core, low clock quad), so they are not 2-3 years apart (assuming you upgrade because you need more power and after 2-3 years you definitely have a power jump).
I assume when you have that 2-3 year replacement policy, obviously the newest PC is the one you use the most and would get W7.

I guess it all depends upon what you use computers for. For example, I'm a systems admin and work with computers for a living. I've purchased 4 computers in the past 5 years. (pentium 4 at 3.2ghz for gaming machine, then Sempron 2800+ for server, then AMD Athlon 64 4600+ for Linux workstation and then Intel Q9550 quad core to replace that Pentium 4). So, maybe he needed two relatively high-end computers to try something or learn something new.

Either one of those two builds can see both flavors of 7(32/64) run with 2gb of memory. The decision for upgrading to 4gb shouldn't be the only factor but which model cpu if not both as well as the better video card will support virtuallization if you some time to decide to try out the XP mode.

For gaming the better video card matched with the better of the two boards would be the preferred for gaming purposes. In fact when going to buy more memory or simply replace the present with larger dimms you will want to look over some newer model video cards.

That simply spells out things for the next new build however while the second on the list is the favored for gaming as well as 7.
