Incorrect Password, on restart after using Windows Easy Transfer

after transferring files from Samsung R530, 32-bit machine to HP Pavilion dv7, i5, 64-bit, using Windows Easy Transfer (both machines running Windows 7) via Belkin F5U279ea cable, all seemed normal

on restart, entered password recently created and used successfully, whereupon received 'incorrect password' message and am now locked out
what can I do?

since it is new there are no data to be preserved, so happy to go back to how it was before I made the transfer, but would need to know to do this

would also like to know what might have happened in the transfer process to nullify my password

any help gratefully accepted

I have always understood the Easy Transfer was meant to transfer your personal files and settings to a new computer. I don't think it would change your password, but I have never actually tried it.

Are you using the same user name and the same password as the original?

Why does your title say you are getting a Blue Screen? Did the Windows 7 install go OK, or did the system come with Windows 7 installed?

after the transfer of files to the new computer, there was a restart, which brings up a blue screen with 'enter password' message; since I had not changed the password since starting up the computer to effect the transfer (when obviously I entered the correct password), then the natural reaction is to assume that something happened during the transfer to lock me out of the new computer

Since I would think the Blue Background password would be the one used on the previous system, are your username and password the same for both?

Did you have more that one user which might have had a different password?

Did you buy that laptop New or USED?
Before you did the file transfer, did you use your new laptop?

What do you mean by "Blue screen"? Is it a Windows screen? Can you post a pic of it?

My reason for ashing the above is "Blue screen" could be a BIOS lock or HDD lock screen.

I installed the stock 140mm case fan outside of case then installed the H70+ 1 of its 120mm fans inside case. Used the 2nd 120mm from the H70 to go in the Gpu tunnel.

I just started the process and will finish it is a while. But the first thing it asks is for a password. It also states if you do not want to use one, do not enter one. Do you remember that?

I will finish the transfer when I get the new install ready, so let us know.

Well, I just went through the entire process, and entered the wrong password 15 times for both password entry pages. I was never "Locked Out". If you did not use a password, do not enter one and just click "check your credentials". If you forgot your password for the Transfer Wizard or your old system........:o

My system did not require a restart after the file transfer. But my password, which I intentionally changed for the new system, remained the same as I had set and did not revert back to the original system password.

thks for these efforts -perhaps I'm confused by 'blue screen': I was referring to the normal blue screen that comes up when you switch on the machine or activate restart and it asks you to enter your password, which I had set when I first got the machine out of the box and set it up for use following the instructions provided. I did this and that is when I got the 'incorrect password' message. I haven't forgotten it or changed it (I wrote it down before I first set it up and had used it to start the machine so I could do the transfer). So something during the transfer changed the password. I was not online, had not been online since switching on: it's a brand new hp dv7, i5, straight out of the box, Windows 7 home premium, bog standard off the shelf as it were.

hi Saltgrass, was just rereading your first reply: yes I was looking to transfer personal files; but you mention transfer of settings. This is not something I would have wanted or expected to be transferred, since there is just me and no user account was set on the source machine. When it refused to take the password, I did try the one for the other machine, to no avail. So, is there something I can do to put it (the new computer) back to what it was before the transfer? No manuals were supplied with the computer.

Ok let me try to understand......

you have a old computer running 7 .... you bought a NEW laptop, started it up, did the first start up instructions and got it up and running and also setup a password for it? (is that the password we are talking about??).... Then you used Windows Easy Transfer to clone your files and settings from the old computer to the new laptop..... And now your password you set up does not work (the one you set on the NEW laptop)??

Did you have a password on the OLD computer?
Was it different than the NEW laptop password?

If so try your OLD computer password on the NEW laptop, Because you transferred those setting over to it (user settings).

I have never used Windows Easy Transfer but if it moved your setting over to the new one it might of moved the password.

All else failed you can just factory reset the laptop and start over. (since your said this.... "since it is new there are no data to be preserved, so happy to go back to how it was before I made the transfer, but would need to know to do this"

I think HP used this for recovery at boot......Look it up in you User Manual.

Turn on or restart the computer, and then press esc while the “Press the ESC key for Startup
Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Then, press f11 while the “Press
<F11> for recovery” message is displayed on the screen.

EDIT: I must of been typing as you added your last comment... Sorry :o, I see you already tried the first part I wrote but the last part should still help you out.....if not go to HP site and look up your model laptop and get the manual (PDF).

I see from Orbital Shark's excellent tutorial dated 5-29-2009, at #8 of step 2 the screenshot that says: restart your computer to complete your transfer. The only difference for me was that I could not access anything.

hi Jeep
am just getting used to the various ins and outs of this site and realise that I missed seeing that you had sent this longer message, so
yes, the files were on a Samsung, 32 bit, r530, french keyboard, with 2 passwords, the first of which comes up before the standard windows 7 screen asking for a password; the second being this latter; yes I tried those and variations on them;
yes the second machine the hp dv7 is absolutely brand new

so yes, I did say that I would be happy to get back to how it was and yes I have tried pressing Esc, but it kept on going on to the loading windows screen - maybe I'm not quick enough, so I'll try again
thks for the suggestion that manuals should be available from HP - I'd be willing to bet that they are on the machine, which of course is a variation on the message "before opening this box, read the instructions", only to find elsewhere on the box, "instructions are in the box" - will try that as well

thks again for taking the time to reply

Try booting and just pressing the key repeatedly till something happens (it might just be the F11 key)! Lets us know how it goes.

Next time before you do anything.... After booting a NEW computer always burn you Restore Disk first! That way you have a way "back to stock" no matter what happens. Then after you get it all setup(after updates and ect.) to your liking make a Image of your disk at that time. Then you will always have a " the way you like it" to fall back on.

it's all go
opm used to mean other people's money, now it's other people's machine
thks, will try what you say when I get back to the machine
