I set windows up over 6 months back now, for some unknown reason win 7 has labeled my very old PATA device as a system partition despite being a storage device. i have no clue why its labeled system.

is there a simple way to un label it as system? when i disconnect the device and attempt a startup repair win 7 cannot see the desired C: drive and thinks its not installed an does not allow me to repair. it throws me as there are no hidden folders on the PATA device and no "windows" folder..... Help!!

If your windows partition is system, just mark the pata thing inactive.

Make sure Win7 hard drive remains set first to boot when you plug back in the other drives, after win7 partition holds the System flag which tells you it can boot itself.

Does the PATA drive then need to boot anything on it?
