Incorrect Username Displayed...?

Good Lord, I really didn't know the best title for this problem. Erm... let's see...

I have a problem with my girlfriends laptop, where she can't install any MSI files, due to a "The file cannot be opened" error, or something to that effect.

After looking in the Permissions settings for the MSI file in question, I noticed something in the Security tab, under User Names.

Where it's supposed to say Miss Ghoul (STEPHANIE-PC\Miss Ghoul), it actually says...
Miss Ghoul (STEPHANIE-PC\")...

There are " where Miss Ghoul should be.

I tried for ages to find out how to change this, but because she's running Windows 7 Home Premium, I have no Group Policy editor (if it even helps to have it).

Is there any way to force change the " to say what it's supposed to say? And could this have an efect on her ability to install MSI files?

Thanks for any help you can provided. Bear in mind she lives in Florida, and I live in the UK, so I have to help her out via LogMeIn. Basically, I can't test any methods straightaway, not until she is awake.

Using this tutorial add Take ownership option to your context menu and then use that option on that particular msi file.
Please report back the result.

Hello Blue Streak,

Was her user account ever named " by mistake, and changed to Miss Ghoul? If so, that would explain it since the original name of the account is kept and tied with permission settings, and is what it should be.

In addition to the above post, as a test, download and merge the .reg file for the listed MSI option in the tutorial below to see if it may be able to. It will restore the default associations for MSI files.

@Neutron16 Thanks. I've downloaded the file, and as soon as I can log onto to her computer, I'll go through the process and report back to you.

@Brink I never actually thought of that. But as far as I know, her original username has never been ". I've also downloaded the MSI REG file, and I'll report back once I can get on her machine. Thanks
