Index Locations - Add or Remove

How to Add or Remove Index Locations in Windows 7 and Windows 8

   Information
The Index keeps track of the files on your computer and stores information about the files, including the file name, date modified, and properties like author, tags, and rating. The index is used to make searching for files in Windows much faster. Instead of looking through your entire hard disk for a file name or file property, Windows scans the index, which allows most results to appear in a small fraction of the time that a search without the index would take.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove folder locations to be included in the index search results in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

   Note
You will not be able to add removable locations to be included in the index. For example, USB flash drives or memory cards.
   Warning
If you make the index too large by including the entire hard drive, or to many folders, then your searches will slow down and take longer for the search results to display. You will also find your hard drive running longer and more often in the background while the index updates itself for changes made to the included folder locations. For the best results, it is recommended that you only add folders that you search frequently to be included in the index.

The index will not include search results from any drive or partition with the A and B drive letters, even if you add their location to the index. This is because the A and B drive letters are reserved for floppy drives. Since a floppy drive is considered to be a removable device, it will not be indexed. Even if this is a hard drive you assigned with the A or B drive letter, it will still be treated the same.

Here's How:
1. Open the Control Panel (icons view) in Windows 7 or Windows 8, and double click on the Indexing Options icon.

2. Click/tap on the Modify button. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: You will notice a quick preview of included folder locations in the index here. These are the default locations. Step1.jpg
3. If You Don't See All Locations on Your Computer in the List A) Click/tap on the Show all locations button. (See screenshot below) Step2.jpg
B) If prompted by UAC, then either click/tap on Yes or provide the Administrator password.
4. To Add Folder Location to be Included in Index Search Results A) Continue to click on the arrows to the right of the check box to expand the folder tree until you reach the location of the folder you want to add, and select it. (See screenshot below) Step3.jpg
B) Check the selected folder's box. (See screenshot above)
5. To Remove Folder Location from being Included in Index Search Results A) Continue to click on the arrows to the right of the check box to expand the folder tree until you reach the location of the folder you want to remove, and select it. (See screenshot below step 4A)

B) Uncheck the selected folder's box. (See screenshot below step 4A)
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have finished adding or removing folder locations to be included in the index.

7. When finished, click/tap on OK. (See screenshot below step 4A)

8. Click/tap on the Close button. (See screenshot below step 2)

   Tip
You may need to rebuild the index afterwards to force an update of the index before your changes are reflected in search results.

That's it,
Shawn

Ah, ok. The Start Menu is able to search beyond what is just in the index. To stop this, open your Customize Start Menu settings, and make sure that the two settings boxed in red are set the same way. Afterwards, the folder shouldn't show up in the Start Menu search results unless the folder is in the All Programs area of the Start Menu, or pinned to the Start Menu.

I noticed a problem when I deselect "Search Program and Control Panel"
Not even the shortcuts that are tagged in start menu are shown in the start menu search box when this option is deselected

Go ahead and check this option then to have them in the search results. I don't think it will show that other folder still.

I have created a new library, in which i have added 3 network drives. I have gone through the indexing options and limited the file types i am searching for.
Will this index update as new files are created on these network drives?
If not is there a way to schedual an auto update of the index?
I would also like to know where I can find the specific file containing my selected list is, as I have 10 other computer that I would like to update with this search preferance.
(and i dont really want to click thru all the file types again and again and again and again....

Hello MicTomli, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As long as the network locations are connected at the time, it'll update the index for them normally along with the other added indec locations in the background when the computer is idle.

Otherwise you could still rebuild the index manually to update them when they are connected.

Hope this helps, :)

Is there any way to have all search locations reset/deleted ...

it looks (acording to MS) that WinSearchIndexer cant deal with juntions. I had added a subfolder created under such a junction to the index. But as the indexer doesnt show the junction above it, one cant remove it.
So I renamed my junction and created a folder whose name was like the one of my junction before and copied the subfolder into it. Now I could remove it from the indexer. Afterwards I deleted the new folder and renamed my juntion.
Resumee: Dont add folders which are located under a junction to the indexer

Yep, a junction point would do it. Thank you for posting back with your results and findings. :)

No "Indexing Options" on my Win7 Control Panel

My Win7 32bit PC does not have "Indexing Options" listed on Control Panel
I looked in "Performance and Information Tools" but it is not there !

Where is "Indexing Options" hiding

Thanks "Brink" :)

I am rather late at acknowledging your guidance. Four months ... my apologies. :o :o
Your tip worked .. my fault .. I forgot I disabled indexing.

I am using "FileSearchEX" to search for contents ... and ... portable "Everything" to find files.
FileSearchEX is perfect for me to search my 4,280 txt files (contents). Takes about 8 seconds for a result.
"Everything" file-find results are immediate, as fast as I can type the file name.
"Everything" portable does not inhibit external storage device removal (the integrated/installed version can cause problems when safely removing)

I have assumed Start > Search ... uses the last index-list, so occasionally I do an "index update" -- haven't had any problems so far.
Indexing slowed my PCs down considerably. A shame MS abandoned the WinXp "Find" dialog in Win7

Thank you for an excellent forum :D

hi it says 0 items indexed and show all locations is greyed out.

could this be because i don't have multiple drives and only one essential C: drive for my computer? also it says 0 items indexed. the most important thing is, How do I index things OUTSIDE my my C: drive, like Libraries, for example: Downloads, Music, Folders made outside of my C: drive, and... music/videos. system specs are
