Indexer went nuts, reading every file - no new files

Indexing was complete.

What might have triggered this is I changed the default location for Music to my D:\Libraries\Music folder which IS indexed. I didn't update any files that are indexed. I see it chugging through all my photos and music (via RESOURCE MONITOR -> DISK view).

Any ideas? It's as if it's updating the index option database for every single file on my PC that was already indexed.

No idea---but do you need indexing? Many people turn it off. I'm not sure what it adds if you don't search file contents as opposed to names.

Yup, it is indexing the same files, but in the new location.

I changed the folder and simply made it the default save location. No files were moved or changed.

I also read on microsoft that even if you move files that ARE indexed, indexer uses the NTFS "handle" rather than the actual file name/location.

I have determined, the few times you want to find something, it's worth having that index built. I indexed 2G of all my emails from the last 10-15 years that took 3-4 hours. It's worth it.

OK. I was doing a simple thing like renaming a Kodak picture folder using the Easyshare software (not Windows Explorer). I renamed a single folder (which ironicaly does NOT change the underlying Windows folder's name itself). Boom, the hard drive took off. Now, every single Kodak picture in evey single Kodak folder has had it's "modified date" set to when I renamed that one single Kodak folder (which really is only renaming it in the Kodak Easyshare database file).

I find it strange that Kodak would somehow change the modified date on every photo in my collection.

Something similar must be what happened when I changed the Set As Default for a user library (documents). As if indexer detects a change (or even potential) and then grinds through the folder to update his index even if only 1 item changed??


Any ideas anyone on all this?

I can't explain it JimL. I've putzed around with various index/search options and I still don't understand the "under the hood" functions. You could likely do without indexing as long as Windows Search is still on, just takes longer.

You could try changing the "Indexing Options" (in the "Control Panel").

I always disable it (on my real PC) as I don't like things thrashing my HDD non-stop for days on end.

You need to have it running, if you want to do searches in the "Libraries".
You can search the actual locations without it though.
