I'm wondering if I got a virus. I got the death blue screen once, but only once. Things boot fine now. Anyway, later, when I try to run various applications, I get errors for some of them, like this:

"The application was unable to start correctly (0x0000005). Click OK to close the application."

Trying to search from the Start menu, it works until I click, "see more."
I get this error:
"windows cannot find "searchquery=picture". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

My IExplorer icon also gave an error, but when I found the IE.exe and re-did a shortcut, it did work.

Any ideas?

]Thanks.

Btw, I have Kaspersky 2012.

Hello, jimlau.

I think in your problem that is one Virus. You can try MBAM you can use Kaspersky Rescure CD to burn one small bootable program who can scan computer before Windows start. I recommend to burn it from your friend or other computer without virus.
That is best way for you.

Trinty.

i ran verification, and it says resource protection found integrity violations. details are included in the CBS.Log vindir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
should i run the repair version of SFC scan?

i think all is well now. when i ran the scan, it did not say it fixed anything. it just went to the prompt again.

i guess it fixed something without displaying what? btw, i tried to open the log, but it said i had no permission.

anyway, the programs that wouldn't work now do.

so could the shutting down the computer by unpluging have been the culprit?

thanks!

Some system files are kept in memory when the system is on and can be damaged because of that if there is a unexpected interruption like that.

I would do a reboot after using sfc to be sure everything is still okay on the next boot.
