Info on Restoring

A little help PLEASE. I purchased a HP G-62 laptop 6 weeks ago and it got a bug in it. The picture,music, and documents apps would not read half the files. I had everything backed up so I went to restore and it restored it back to as the pc said "out of the box" condition. After this I went through the entire process of setting up a new pc. All files and other things I had installed on it was gone. It seems to be working fine. Now the questions: 1 Did I fix it or only put off the problem? When I took it out of the box I made 5 restore disk.2 What are these disk for because I did not use them in this restore process. Thanks to all

Hi, welcome to the forums

You'll find that a lot of manufacturers provide a factory "system restore" which is stored on a seperate partition. The system also gets bundled with software to perform a complete system backup...It's essentially the same thing. Depending on how much software you install or user files you create the "disk" backup could be considerably larger than the factory restore. To use those disks you'd need to run the backup software from within windows.

You'll find that you issue may have been caused by some piece of software the your previously installed which would have made some changes to the registry (how/what software is used to open files). By performaing the "restore" you've not exactly fixed it but put it back to a state where no other software has been installed.

Try to keep a track of any software you install and if issues occur then it's more than likely due to the latest software installed.

If you feel the lappy is defective, return it to the seller and get another before the warranty expires, if that happens you will be stuck with a worthless PC and no recourse.

I dont think the pc is defective otherwise it would have been gone. I still dont know what the 5 disk are for. It did not ask to insert any of them. Also did I fix it? Is this all you need to do to fix one of these with 7 on it? As far as the amount of files, I had about 200 songs and about 6,000 pictures and about 50 pages of document and about 15 minutes of video. The only downloaded software was Itunes, Google crome, And Safari. That is not a lot of things on a 3/320 hard drive. I had a Asus Eee Netbook with xp to do the identical same thing last year. The 5 DVD's you say that you burnt also give you the
capability to restore your computer to it's Original Factory Condition.
The only time you would need these would be if your hard drive totally failed
and you had to replace it with a new blank hard drive. The
recovery proceedure in that case would be to boot your system
with the first of the 5 DVD,s in the DVD drive and follow the
on_screen instructions to restore the system to the new hard drive.

The second method to restore the system to Out Of The Box condition
is the method you apparently used. In this case you probably booted into
your Compaq's Recovery Options and restored your system from
the hidden Recovery Partition currently on your Hard Drive.

I hope this clears up your questions about Total System Recovery.

As for all your Music, Pictures, documents etc, it is always a good idea
to occasionally back them up either to an external device or burn them
to DVD's.

Hey Man Thanks a million. You done GOOOOOOOOD The pc is working flawlessly. I learned a long time ago to back up everything. I had it on a ext.Hard Drive. A few clicks and the pc was like new. The Vista drove me to a Mac. This is the first pc I have bought in 5 years and probally my last. I have to admit 7 is better than Vista. All my other ones have XP. By the way the ext. drive hasent been on the pc in about 4 weeks. Can you get a virus on a ext hard drive?

Thanks again. I run Kaspersky. The 2 pc I got bugs, on 1 had Windows security and this one had Norton. When you plug anything in to the pc with Kaspersky on it, it always prompts you to scan and that is what I did to the Ext. Hard Drive. It Took about 15 minutes and said no threats. I guess that is all you can do. I have been on the Mac for 2 years and 7 is a little new to me. It is better than Vista but I liked XP pretty well. I have XP Professional on the Mac. This restore thing is pretty neat. I guess Microsoft had to do something because Apple was gaining on the market. The thing that amazes me is the money they charge people on this simple pc repair.
