initial 0 byte partition

When I clean installed W7 it would create 3 partitions
0 byte = unallocated
100MB - reserved
and 80GB (the rest) = install

Somehow, I eventually got rid of that 0 byte partition during one of my reinstalls.
I thought I knew how I did it, but apparently not.

I am trying to install W8 on a spare drive that I probably tried unsuccessfully to image my W7 system to when it still had the 0 byte partition.

It is doing the same thing and I can't get rid of it.

Any suggestions????????

I managed to get rid of it again. My memory had a flashback..........

Here is what I had to do.
I connected the drive to my laptop via an ESata cable.
I used disk manager to delete the partitions - 100MB and my system partition. The 0 byte was visible but I couldn't do anything with it because it was 0bytes.
Once the others were unallocated they were all integrated.

I created a partition with everything that was unallocated and formatted it.
I connected it back to desktop and clean installed W7. The 0byte partition was gone.

Apparently, since it shows up as an unallocated partition during the install, the above procedure was able to integrate it back so that the install didn't break it out again. Just strange that disk manager could do it and a clean install cannot.

When I did it with the install the 0 byte showed until I deleted the 100MB - it was then "integrated". I deleted the system and had one unallocated area. As soon as I recreated the "system" partition, windows created the 100MB and system and the unallocated 0 byte was back.
