install failed twice

I have tried twice to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Primium 64 bit and it has failed. The first time I got a blue screen and the second time it got to the 4th step 50% finished (first time I was gone while it was running) and it restarted and rolled back to Vista. Gave me the "not successful" message. I'm not sure what else it said becasue i didn't write it down.

I purchase this computer this summer (HP Pavilion notebook) with Vista Home Premium 64 bit installed. I've had more blue screens and restarts than I can count! I was hoping it was Vista but maybe it's just my computer? Is it worth trying again? I really don't want to do a clean install.

The second time I tried the upgrade I shut down all processes that I thought I could and still run the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome

could be a lot of things. Since you have had BSOD's can you use these to find and upload it to us? http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lo...-nov-generating-memory-dump-hung-process.html

Successful upgrades are like 50 percent, sometimes people have great success, and others don't. If you really want to upgrade your laptop and not clean install. I would first check to see if there are any updates from HP. Like BIOS updates. and also while you are there you will want to save all of the drivers you will need for Windows 7..

If you have no idea what I am talking about..don't worry. What is you HP Pavilion notebook model?(example Mine is and HP Pavilion notebook Dv5.) From there we can find the drivers you need...

Also what disk are using to install Windows 7 on.. 32bit or 64bit.. You will need the 64bit install disk..

Hope this Helps..and Happy Holidays.:)

Ken, In the directions you linked it says to generate memory dump report from a hung up (not responding) application. I don't have one of those at the time... will the report still show what you need? Just pick one?

Ryan, I have done regular checks and updates with HP but not sure if BIOS was included in that. My model is Pavilion dv3. I do have a 64 bit Windows 7 disc.

I think i've got all the updates. I even did an HP scan and it says all software and drivers are up to date. No BIOS updates there.

The remedy for the problems you describe is a clean install. It would have probably fixed the Vista, too.

The corruption you describe in Vista will be transferred in-place into Win7 by upgrading.

If there was ever a time to clean install, it is under your circumstances and looking forward to the best OS ever.

Back up your files, gather your program disks, installers, boot from the DVD, plug ethernet and "Connect to the internet during install" to get latest drivers, Updates," select Custom install, use Advanced drive tools to set up partition(s) as you wish, format and install.

Afterwards, get remaining drivers/Updates from Windows Updates, check the Device manager for any missing drivers which you can find, along with any favorite apps, on your computer manufacturer's Support Downloads page for your model. Adobe reader/flash and Java runtime/free Ofc suite are on their sites.

+1

I agree with gregrocker, by doing a clean install you are wiping away the corruption..and you will have a fresh Windows 7 ready to use!

that's what i feared would be the answer! i'm collecting my software restall info, files and CD's. things seem to have gotten worse with the restarting, freezes, and BSOD now.
does anyone know if installing windows 7 will this negate my warranty with HP?

Never fear a clean install., It is like getting a new computer, only better since most computers today come with bloatware the clogs the registry and corrupts the OS when uninstalled.

However once you get the clean install done, you never have to resintall again if you use Win7 backup imaging to save a backup image externallly and to a primary formatted partition (if you want) so that the HD or a replacement can be reimaged flawlessly in 15 minutes.

As far as your question about voiding your tech support warranty with HP, did the Win7 upgrade kit come from them? If so, then they will support the clean install. If not, they may say they cannot support Win7 on your computer, even require you to use factory recovery disks to restore to previous OS to service hardware warranty during it's year term. But that is no reason not to clean install.

thanks for your help. unfortunately, my problem was apparently not vista related. i am still having restart after restart now that i have done the clean install. (which went well, btw) possibly worse than before the install. i bought the computer from best buy in july and will start there today, hopefully. the windows 7 disc did come from HP so hopefully that won't be an issue. i'm not going to start installing any of my software again until this is resolved. Thanks again for the info and support!

Restarts such as you are seeing usually relate to a power supply issue of some sort.
