Alright, I just finished building a new computer and I can't seem to get Windows to install.

XP: It loads the inital setup files and after the first restart a dialog pops up saying loading something or other and then the screen turns a light blue and the system freezes.

7: I have the 7 RC from Microsoft and that won't even install. I get the first black screen with the grey bar indicating it's loading files then the screen changes and it says starting Windows. Then nothing. The screen goes blank. I don't even see the little windows graphic.

I've tried this disk in another computer and it loads up and installs fine.

Please help me out :)

New Build

Welcome Travis.
You don't give us a lot to go on.
From what I understand this system is a new build.
Once completed:
  • Did you conduct power post tests? Was it succesful?
  • Do you have access to the BIOS? If yes, did you change the boot priority?
  • Is the iso for Windows 7 x86? or x64?
Let us know the answers to these start up questions so we can formulate a resolution.

I don't know how to manually conduct the post tests... The ones that run when the computer is first turned on come back fine. I do have access to the BIOS and I didn't change the boot priority but just select the dvd drive to boot from. I have discs for both x86 and x64. They both go through the initial grey bar at the bottom and then it goes to a black screen that states: Starting Windows

then nothing. The animated Windows graphic is not shown. I cleared the CMOS and it didn't help anything.

Alrighty then, we start from scratch!
  1. Insert your your motherboard software disc into your drive.
  2. Restart!
  3. Install your mobo drives, usb drives and grafix drivers.
  4. I suggest that the HD may not be recognised by the new OS so if you have a driver disc that came with your new HD remove the mobo software disc abd insert the hard drive software disc and format/install drivers for the hard drive.
  5. Select the iso you want to install. Insert it into your drive.
  6. restart the system and enter the bios and change the boot priority to cd/dvd as first boot!
  7. Save the setting and restart.
See if that helped.

I don't believe there is anything to install the drivers to. There is no OS on the hdd.

I've been able to sucessfuly install Linux. I tried to install XP and it allows me to reformat the drive and after the first restart I am presented with a short loading dialog and then a bright blue screen. When I use either 7 disc, I get the first loading bar at the bottom and the screen changes to "Starting Windows" then goes blank.

ISO disk

Well then if linux installed its possible that both iso disks are corrupted.
My first attempt at installing os 7 was a unsuccessful due a bad burn.
Try this:
If you still have the OS 7 download on another system use iso burn or what ever software you used to burn a new image. However when you make the new iso step down the burn speed to the slowest possible setting. There have been reports that if the iso is burned at hi speed it corrupted. I stepped my speed down to the lowest setting and had a successful instal.

I am in the process of doing this now. The slowest is 2.5x

However, this wouldn't explain why XP is uninstallable as it's a retail disc.

I believe that the hard drive is fine as I am able to install and run Linux on it. I am also able to partition it with the XP disc. I have changed the first boot device to be the disc drive.
