I posted an earlier thread about installing Outlook 2003 onto a Win 7 64bit but have since found something that maybe a better fit for my situation.

That is installing Outlook Express 6 onto my new Windows7 64bit machine. I found this site who appear to have a download for a version that runs on Win 7, 8... machines - runasxp.

This old email client is very familiar to me and does exactly what I need. Plus it will be easy to import my large address book and email store folder over and be up and running in no time flat.

My question is, has anyone installed and tested this....? Is this a safe download...?

I've frankly never heard of it at all on this forum or elsewhere.

I'd love to know that it works and is fantastic as I certainly liked OE.

If I downloaded it, I'd certainly upload the file to Total Virus to see if they get it a pass.

Let us know if you learn more or try it out.

I don't know what to tell you, but I'd at least do a Google search for each of those 3 red items to see if they are serious or just some innocuous form of adware.

I'm successfully running MS office outlook express 2003 on a win7 64 setup. I believe I had to remove all later vestiges of MS office software prior to installing it. I seem to remember that Msoft had 3 files on line to facilitate the complete removal of later versions but damned if I can find them.

Interesting thread.

I use Outlook Express 6 on the WinXP and its worked great for many years. M$ don't do it anymore as they use Windows Live for Win7 and above which is total rubbish. I've just downloaded oe6_2.00.exe and virus and malware scanned it and its clear, I will let you know if it works.

Hi Keith
After hours of old file checks I've at long last found the procedure that I initially used to wipe all outlook and office software.
3 files you require are MicrosoftFixit 50154, 50416, 50450.
I remember I ran these 3 files, rebooted and installed MS office 2003 which had the old outlook express version which I am still running after 4 years with no probs.
Whether this will work for MS office 2006 ??? and I don't know if office 2006 had the old OE on the disk.

Best of luck

Well I just ran this new app oe6_2.00.exe and it asks for payment to use is so forget it. M$ should provide a decent app for Outlook Express as they supplied it in the first place.

It's been a while since my original post but happy to report the following concerning oe6_2.00.exe:

I forwarded the file to Kaspersky Lab for checking. After some weeks I finally got an answer back to confirm it was clean.

I've installed this version of Outlook Express 6 into my new Win7 64bit machine about 6 weeks ago and its been working fine. Runs exactly the same way as OE6 did on an XP machine.

You do need to install a spell checker add on for 64bit machines - this is available free through RunAsXP but not made clear from the initial download.

The only thing that doesn't work are Spam Filter Add Ons which allow one to mark email messages as spam and places them into a seperate spam folder and blocks future emails. Fortunately, my email hosting supplier has a good spam filter so most spam emails don't make it to my inbox.

This version of OE6 isn't a microsoft product. It was developed by Run As XP for those of us who prefer OE6. To obtain this product you need to make a donation of Minimum US$10 or EU$10. For that donation you get 3 licences.

I've looked at most of the email clients out there and prefer OE6. So for me the $10 donation was money well spent.

Hope this helps any others thinking of installing this email client.

Outlook Express 6 on computer running Win7 Home Premium 32-Bit

Dear Members,

I wrote to software expert Alvin (Assistenza) as I see that he has used Win7 and Outlook Express together. The file however installs all in Itlaian! I downloaded it onto a 32-Bit computer using Win7 Home Premium but did not try to use it after seeing it was all in Italian, Alvin said that he does not have an English language file and said that the Italian version may only run on 64-Bit (though the file seems to indicate that 32-Bit also works).

On the Forum, in another posting another member (74 years) has been using OE for years on Win7!

Please, does anyone have a resolution to run Outlook Express 6 on a Win7 computer 32-Bit?

With thanks, Victor (London) 15th April 2023.

Help with OE6 and Win7 Home Premium 32-Bit Alan Price (now retired)

Dear SiliconBeaver,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply message.

I will try the link and see what happens and report back.

Meanwhile, I have been working on OE6 and back-ups as well. I had purchased Alan Price's clever programme "Express Assist 7" also a later Version 8 (which required online activation - now impossible as Alan's website in Canada no longer exists) which he kindly sent me as a gift. I have found this programme very useful many times as it backs up the entire OE6 folders structure and all of the tens of thousands of messages I have (many with attachments) onto a hard drive (internal or external). Then, if later your hard drive fails or if you are upsizing it or re-installing a new instance of WinXP, then you can restore everything to the new drive or installation of OE6 in quite a short time.

Just lately, the programme has suffered from an "unspecified error" although I have got it working OK when doing a limited back-up (as you can select which folders are to be saved and later restored in both instances).

I noticed that some members use Thunderbird (Mozilla) but I tried this briefly and had trouble with the font size being too small and also I wasn't sure whether importing my OE6 content means it would be stripped from OE6 (scary) or merely copied to Thunderbird?

Thanks again and regards, Victor. 15th April 2023 23.06 London.

I had tried to import OE6 emails using Thunderbird (Mozilla), but it failed due to the time span being too broad. Outlook can be imported. OE couldn't.

hence my OE keeps all old emails cutoff by Thunderbird start.

while Thunderbird manages any new emails.

As long as I can't forget my past, I must go this way. (OE and Thunderbird manage my old/new emails respectively).

OE is really out-of-date. many security issues on new OS. I have to stop using it.

Further message re. Wicky Hu and OE6 & Win7 etc

Dear SiliconBeaver,

I looked at the "Wicky Hu" web material about running OE6 in Win7 etc but unfortunately it is too complicated for me to understand.

It is a pity that Microsoft cut off OE6 users in the first place!

Italian Alvin Assistenza's file: Alvin's OE file installs straight off and opens up a fresh instance of OE and I can see that it would be more or less straightforward to use without further ado - the only problem is that it's all in Italian and I could not exactly match up the English programme settings, etc as they are not quite positioned in the same way. If they had matched, I would have tried further although I don't know if my Express Assist 7 programme would have worked.

I wonder how Alvin has managed to do the job without users having to make various adjustments?

Apparently, Plusnet/Madasafish are going to discontinue e-mails at some future date. Presumably, I will still have access to my 400,000 odd e-mails but my e-mail address will be useless?

Thank you again for your kind help.

Regards, Victor 16th April 2023 London. (edited 1.28am)

PS. Thank you also for your second message which I have only just seen.

Dear SiliconBeaver & Members,

I have just received an e-mail from software expert Alvin in Italy re. my enquiry about running Outlook Express 6 in Win7 Home Premium (32-Bit). Alvin very kindly wrote:

".....I found this on the internet .... Outlook Express 6 (OE6) for Win7/Win8/Win10 - Simple.Net

listen to me carefully:

- download file with name OE6.v0.5.7z from website ....

- copy the extracted folder to C:\Program Files

- after the extraction in the folder there is the file named setup.bat ....

- Run the setup.bat file as administrator ...

- Click on the file named msmn.exe that you find inside the extracted folder
as administrator ...

.... and here is Outlook Express in English ....

It was tested on Windows 7 SP1 on Virtualbox ....!!!!!

Just remember that there is no support so if you find any problem.... I can't help you......

Best, ......"

I will try to follow Alvin's guidance and see what happens. I will report back!

Success so far!

Dear SiliconBeaver & Members,

Following Alvin Assistenza's kind help from Italy, I just succeeded in installing and using Outlook Express 6 on my elderly Acer 7600GT computer using Win7 32-Bit. In the end, the key application .exe file is named msimn (61.0 Kb)

I have sent Alvina a test e-mail and to thank him again.

I am now going to try to copy my 21 years of existing OE6 e-mails over to the new installation using Express Assist 7 (which may or may not work?}

Regards and many thanks,

Victor 18th April 2023 1.57pm.

- - - Updated - - -

Dear Members,

My OE6 on Win7 32-Bit is still working nicely on a second installation after some .dll omission adjustments!

So it is possible after all!

However, so far I have not been able to "restore" my 21 years of existing e-mails into the new setup.

I am still trying different things. It may be because the save is made on my Acer 7700GX (running WinXP) and the new installation with OE6/Win7 32-Bit is on my other older machine (Acer 7600GT). I will instead place the new setup internal drive into the 7700GX and try to do a restore on the same machine to see if that might help? The Acers are very similar and you can swap the hard drives between machines which is useful when I get "Boot Manager" problems with the older 7600GT which often can refuse to load up Win7 32-Bit.

I noticed that whilst doing various things I get a message about requiring permission from the Administrator? I am the only user of the computer - I thought that I was the Adminstrator? Any advice on this would be welcome please.

Regards and thanks, Victor 18th April 2023 10.07pm (London)
