Has anyone tried to install 7 on an "external" hard drive that will be installed into a laptop at a later date. I have a laptop that is being diagnosed for instability (but also had Vista installed). I won't have it back for a few days.

I want to preserve Vista on the old drive since the unit is a family members machine.

So, will installing 7 on a new drive mess up a host machine?

Host: custom I3, 10gb ram

I am not entirely clear on what you are trying to accomplish. Could you possibly explain it again?

If you are just worried about preserving the data on the Vista drive why not just make a clone to the disk. You could use Clonezilla - About to make an exact copy of the drive. When the computer comes back from the repair shop you can reapply the image.
