install specified program updates before itself

if you install for example a security update for internet explorer 8 before having internet explorer 8 installed (lets say i have 7) could it cause problems?
(and after installing the security update of ie8 install ie8)

You won't be able to install the update if you haven't installed the program.

Those updates won't be available in Windows Update unless the product is installed that the updates are for.
