Install time difference between "Upgrade" and "Custom"

Is the time to "Upgrade from vista to 7 supposed to be wayyy longer then it would to do jsut a clean install? (For example, hanging at 18% for a while while installing during upgrade)

(posting this since i cant get any replies to a previous topic)

The upgrade process will always be longer, and sometimes considerably. The upgrade process has to move/relocate previous files and keep certain registry entries based on software already installed. Did the upgrade eventually complete? (it's a silly question but you could be dual booting). If not then it could be a bad burn and your systems is taking it's time trying to read the install files from the DVD.

I let it sit there at 18% for about...half an hour...I got impatient cause I had a paper to do. I'd dual-boot.. But i dont want to part. 35gigs from the 160 I have left.... I may let it do an upgrade overnight tonight If I dont have to raid (World of Warcraft). So it does take a considerableeee amount of time? I really want to use 7 but I actually do like the software that has come pre-installed on my laptop (HP MediaSmart programs, cyberlink dvd suite) so I want to do my hardest to keep those.

ber, you're way too impatient, in my case that step took about 2-3 hours, same with the "moving data" part.
for a total 6 hours, unfortunately I get bsods after finishing and have to rollback.
so cant help you more on that

I would advise burning another DVD at the slowest speed, this can reduce burn errors which lead to read issues. It might be worth a try....

I had a similar thing happen. Mine hung at 21% (of the Uncompressing Files step) for a pretty long while (at least 30 mins), but I went to bed so I dunno if it hung after that.

I unzipped the ISO and did the upgrade from my HD, so there couldn't have been DVD read errors.

Im finally tossing in the towel and dual-booting, dont want to risk not being able to use the recoverypartition if things go bad.

Oh, yeah. When I woke up, it was at the login screen. Other than my Recently Opened Documents, everything was perfect. My screensaver had reset, I think, too, but so far, looks the same.

Unfortunately, I'm running an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ which doesn't support the AMD-V Virtualization feature, so I can't use XP mode. But you know, with only 1GB of RAM, I'd say Windows 7 is working pretty well for me.

Yeah...I did a test to see what software would work or not, and come to find out, that the recovery module/program is unable to work with 7 so i decided to just dualboot. COngrats on getting it to work =)

Custom lets you go and do a full format, rejig the partitions and install if you already have an OS on your computer.

Upgrade isn't reliable and has been known to cause problems.
