Hi,

I'd like to install win 8.1 on a different hard drive along with my current win 7. Can I simply mount the win8.1 iso (daemon-tools) and install it from win7, or do I have to burn a dvd first?

I think I would just do a clean install to a blank drive. That's what I did. It lessens the chance of mucking up Windows 7 and it will still dual boot. I wouldn't do it from inside Windows 7. Too much room for error.

That's just me, though, YMMV.

Always make bootable install media which may also be needed for booted repairs.

And always unplug all other HD's before booted OS install.

Best method to burn the ISO is using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Okay, it worked (mounting iso and installing within win7). The key was to run setup.exe from sources folder and not from the root.

Since I later decided to switch between my primary and secondary harddrive, I needed the installation disc to activate the new partition and make it bootable (diskpart, bootrec...).

Thanks for the links and tips.
