You will need two Windows 7 licences to upgade one to Windows 8.

Windows 8 EULA

Microsoft said:
What about upgrading the software? The software covered by this agreement is an upgrade to your existing operating system software, so the upgrade replaces the original software that you are upgrading. You do not retain any rights to the original software after you have upgraded and you may not continue to use it or transfer it in any way. This agreement governs your rights to use the upgrade software and replaces the agreement for the software from which you upgraded. After you complete your upgrade, additional software will be required to playback or record certain types of media, including DVDs.

I have no intention of ever setting up a dual-boot system, but just out of curiosity:

Does anyone know if Microsoft enforces that aspect of the EULA?

I can imagine that the Win8 installer could phone home and invalidate the Windows 7 license key, but that would make it awkward if you decided to revert to Win7.

Shawn advises that they can keep the Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade aside Win7 up until the time they must activate Windows 8. Then Win7 must not be used for as long as it is qualifying for Upgrade.

You can ask him if there is some detection feature since I'm not yet familiar with Win8 enough to know. I think he's pointing to the EULA, but it may somehow be more stringent than for all of those who kept XP alongside Win7 during a transition period.

If you upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Win95, you can not legally use the original software.
It is the same today.
