The installation ran to completion and said it would reboot. It did, but just to the to the "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD." I didn't press a key expecting it to boot to Windows. Nothing happened.

I took the CD out and rebooted. Black screen, the cursor moves down three times. Everything stopped.

I should say that I have had Win 7 installed on this computer before, from the same Install CD. There were problems, but not these.

I'm guessing your BIOS is set to boot first from the DVD drive.

I'd probably start over with the BIOS set to boot from HD first. Use the one-time boot menu to choose the DVD as the boot drive when you start the install.

Might have been able to prevent the problem if you had removed the disc from the DVD drive before that final reboot.

At least, that's what it sounds like to me, based on your description.

You are correct about the boot sequence, but, if I remove the CD it has the same result as leaving the CD in and then rebooting. Black screen, cursor moves down three rows. Everything stops.

I'd at least try the install one time with the HD set as the first boot device.

You are trying to go from XP to Windows 7?

If I do it with the HD set as first boot device, it does nothing. No operating system.

I assume you mean you tried to reinstall from scratch with the HD set as first boot device and that the installation appeared to go OK until the last reboot and then you got no operating system found error?

Or do you mean that you could not boot from the DVD?

What installation media are you using? Burned DVD? Retail installation DVD?

Is this a new hard drive or has it had other operating systems on it?

My guess would be that you have a problem with the bootmgr. I would try to fix it by running a starup/repair 3 times.

The Win7 installation media is provided along with tool to burn to disk or flash stick in Step 6 of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219533-troubleshooting-windows-7-failure-boot.html which also includes everything else that can be done, if confirming the Partition Marked Active is 100mb System Reserved (preferred if you have it) or C, and then running http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105541-startup-repair-run-3-separate-times.html does not work. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/307529-install-windows-system-msata-isrt.html
