Solved Installation Error 1606. Could not access network location '\plugins'

Hey,

i have a serious problem during the installation of Office 2007. In midst of the installation i get the error: Error 1606. Could not access network location '\plugins'
I use Windows 7 Professional 32bit.

I have searched for solutions for a couple of hours by now, but nothing worked.
What i have done so far:
- Checked my 'User Shell Folders' registry folders for incorrect values - nothing found.
- Executed Microsoft FixIts #50154, #50356 and #50461
- Updated .NET Framework to newest version
- Updated IE to newest version
- Ran 'sfc /SCANNOW' - no Integrityproblems found

None of those actions seem to help. All my registry entries look just fine.
Please i need help.

did you take-ownership of your C: partition? that will cause that problem.

Yes, it happend recently. My Windows 7 System runs for almost a year now, and i tried installing Office 2007 yesterday the first time.
No other instances or versions of Office have been installed before.
No other occurences of this or similar problems with any other software yet.


I have found alot of solutions for Error 1606 in conjunction with %APPDATA% or something like \Public\Desktop. But for my exact problem with Error 1606 and '\plugins' few to none postings can be found.


Also i have a C:\plugins folder. It contains only one file 'npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll' which is apparently a PDF XChange Viewer file.. maybe if i try and delete that folder... i'll go test.

take ownership is granting your self file permissions and ownership of files. it is a dos command and you can also install a reg entry to quickly do it. I wanted to see what would happen if i took ownership of all the files in the C: drive. after that i couldn't install or uninstall pretty much anything. I reinstalled.

As for your issue. I'm right here with you looking for possible solutions.

Have you tried activating the actual administrator account and trying to install. I didn't get an error like yours, but i have had installation problems before where i needed to log into the hidden administrator account.

Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

Just throwing out long shots at the moment

also safe mode with networking wouldn't hurt

maybe even disable your antivirus

by the way. i believe i had this problem before with some adobe sofware and went to the hkey local machine and removed everything to do with adobe as well as searching for adobe in the filesystem and removing every folder and file to do with it. not sure what the problem was, but it fixed it.

Cant say it would be an easy process for you though. as it is a Microsoft program your dealing with in a Microsoft os with Microsoft software installed all over the place. would be hard to find all the fils and folders.

I had trouble uninstalling though. not installing

Aww man, i can't believe it. It just worked.

I saw this hidden folder "plugins" on C:\ which just contained the 'npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll' a browser plugin file for PDF XChange Viewer. Zipped the folder as a backup, then deleted it.

And voila, Office install ran like a charm.

Thanks for your help, that hint with the ownership of C:\ led me to the right way
