I'm re-installing Win 7 64bit from the Microsoft disc supplied with my computer, and have been following the clean install tut no.1649. All seemed well, but at point 16, when I had confirmed the timezone the next screen wasn't as shown, but the desktop (pic 18 of 19), and nothing else.
The screen resolution was was 800 x 600 and the best I can set it to via display is 1400 x 1050 when it should be 1920 x 1080. Also I am connected to the internet via an ethernet cable, but my screen is showing that there are no connections available.

I was obviously in trouble to re-install, and now feel I am deeper in the mire. Can someone please advise?

You followed the tutorial for Clean Install, ok? :)

Do you have the Graphics Card's Driver CD? Install the driver.

If you dont have, Go to AMD Graphics Drivers & Software, download the required display driver, and install it.

Everything will be OK, dont worry :)

Installed the graphics driver and thankfully the resolution is now sorted. Thanks.

I'm still having a problem with my internet connection though, the troubleshooter says that windows didn't find a properly installed network adapter. Again any ideas please?

Excuse my ignorance, but is this something that would be on the motherboard disc - like LAN Utility setup that I have found, or am I miles away?

So would it be best to run the complete setup disc again or sort out the drivers above?

I'm back in business Arc, many thanks for your help (and others on this forum), it really is appreciated.

One other point though, after installing the drivers each time I restart now, I get a message saying 'you must restart for the changes to take effect' even when I have restarted in response to the message?

Install the network driver to get online then do all of your Important and Optional Windows Updates to get the drivers Win7 wants. There will also be vital performance and security updates, so do them all after setting Updates to Automatic install, treat Recommended as Important, and enable Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware .

If the restart prompt continues to interfere then System Restore back before you installed those drivers, install only Network driver and immediately do all of your Updates before doing anything else. Afterwards check in Device Manager for any missing drivers to provide from the device's Support Downloads webpage.

Here are other Best Practices to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which also apply to retail Win7.

Thanks gregrocker, that's now sorted.

Hi again Folks

Just when I thought I could get going again, another problem!
Having sorted things as detailed, I've been merrily trying to get my computer back to some semblance of what it was, re-installing stuff etc. BUT suddenly three times now I've been beavering away for about 20 mins, and my mouse freezes, I can't do anything, and the computer switches off. If I restart the only message I get is that 'windows didn't shut down correctly etc. do I want a normal or safe start'. Nothing else, another 20 min session and the same again.

Again any ideas please?

Just a thought gregrocker, sometimes when I re-boot, it's showing that the CPU is overheating and on further examination of the BIOS I can see CPU temp of about 80 C and MB temp of 28 C, but I don't know what is acceptable.

Looking on Google it seems this could cause the symptoms I'm getting? Apart from cleaning the fan & heatsink (which I don't think are clogged or dirty) what could I do?

The temp is too high for Core I5 so I would re-evaluate your cooling system, blow out any dust in heatsink and elsewhere, consider repasting the heatsink if indicated, perhaps add a case fan. You can adjust variable fan speeds upward with Speedfan.

Videos are available via googling for showing how to repaste almost any CPU.

You can more closely monitor the CPU temps from the System tray with Core Temp.

Thanks again gregrocker, eventually I contacted the manufacturer who thought that reducing the clocking might help, so they talked me through the process and it now seems 'stable' and I'm keeping everything crossed!

Again many thanks for your help (and others on this forum), it really is appreciated.
