Installation Never Starts: Something about volmgr.sys

Hello!

This may not be enough information to get help, unfortunately for me to get the complete error message I need to take apart this computer a bit and it's generally a bit of a hassle. I hope to get at least a hint of how to fix it with what I have before I do that.

I have a fresh system. It has no prior installations and starts up just fine with all the right number of beeps and no errors. I go to boot from my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 OEM disc and it starts loading. Once the loading bar finishes (I think it passes twice, once rather quickly and then a bit more slowly) it gives me an error about not being able to load drivers, referencing "volmgr.sys".

It tells me to choose the somethingorother repair option on boot, but I never see anything like that. The disc boots, loads, and errors.

If I hit Continue on the error, I get to a menu. On the top I can choose to install (says something about ESM enabled, I think) and on the bottom it has a memory check tool.

Choosing the install option just gives the same error. I had 4x2GB RAM in at the time, so I figured the memory check would take ages and I couldn't keep the computer up for very long at the time so I didn't do that.

Is this most probably a RAM issue? Is that why it can't load the driver? Is the install disc faulty? I don't know much, but I can't think of anything else that could be wrong.

Is it worth my time to run a memory test, or should I do something else first/instead?

If you need the error code or the exact error message to give a conclusive answer, it'll be easier to get that than the go run the test, so that wouldn't be too much of a problem.

I appreciate your time!

Hello EyvindM, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have a thorough look at the additional information presented below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media, use Step One of this tutorial at the first link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive.
  • Then if you do not want to create the new Windows 7 "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #2 to create, format and mark Active a single 100GB partition to do the installation to.
  • If you do want to create the "System Reserved" partition use the outline in Step Two #3 to create, format and mark Active the System Reserved partition and then create and format the 100GB partition to do the installation to.
Either way, running the "clean all" then creating and formatting the partition(s) using diskpart will get you the best possible space to do a clean install of Windows 7 to; you can always extend the Windows partition to include the remaining unallocated space on the HDD / SSD or create additional Primary partitions or an Extended partition after the installation completes if you choose.

Try removing all but 2gb of RAM to install. Test your RAM: RAM - Test with Memtest86. Swap RAM sticks.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS version update. If so, reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

While in BIOS setup, make sure SATA controller is set to AHCI to try install.

Where did you get Win7? If you burned it yourself: Confirm ISO integrity, then burn another at 4x speed using ImgBurn.
