Hello everyone, I have come across a weird problem (or at least have searched for hours and not found anyone with the same problem) I installed Windows 7 Home premium this morning on my new computer, its a brand new hard drive that was completly formatted, everything went well but once the installation was done i went to My Computer and it says "0.98gb free of 1.36tb" But i have nothing on the computer, so i checked for partitions ect in computer management and find i only have 216mb unallocated space. I have been searching for a fix all night and in the end decided maybe it would be best to full format and reinstall windows but i cant format the HDD and when i run the windows disk it does not even find the HDD anymore. I was hoping someone here knows how to fix this or has had the same problem in the past, any help would be great, thank you.

[Also] Okay through computer managment i have found 1.3tb of the hard drive is "Primary Partition" for System,boot,pagefile.. and so on and as you cant delete a partition that is system im stuck, i have tried shrinking it but it will not let me do that either and because of how big the primary partition is i dont have enough room to move all the system files.

1. Run WinDirStat to see what is on the disk. Post the result (picture) here.
2. Post a picture of your full Disk Management.

First, fill out your system specs in detail. It will save people from having to ask you about hard drive brand and model, motherboard brand and model, etc. What version you are running if there were revisions (especially for the motherboard) would be helpful too.

You should also post your Disk Management screen. Click the Start orb, then in the "Search Files and Folders" box type "Computer Management", then click on Disk Management. You can use the snipping tool to nab a screenshot. :)

EDIT: You're fast, whs! :D

Woah, i see hundreds upon hundreds of films, all exactly 1gb each, although this was a custom install so everything should have been deleted?

They are all [.vob] files located in C:\DE\shares\My Movies - DVD but going through My Computer i cannot find that path

Something must have replicated from what was on the HDD before. I would do a clean with e.g. Dban http://www.dban.org/

Great suggestion. :ditto:

I know it stinks to feel like you're starting all over, but it will never be easier than it is right now. If you try to clean the drive, then install a bunch of programs only to run into trouble down the road you'll be even farther behind. :)

Just be aware that the Dban run will take a while in view of the size of the disk.

Why are you install a 32 bit OS with 8gb of ram?
To use all 8gb you will need to install a 64 bit OS.

Why are you trying to run the Install DVD? You need to boot the Win7 installer to use Drive Options to Delete, repartition and Format before install. Clean Install Windows 7

If the install fails when booting the installer, then wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command from Command Line in System Recovery Options. This is much faster and is all that is needed to overcome boot sector corruption which might block install.

I think before setting up an operating system including Windows 7 one must check the hard disk for partitions and organize them properly with a good Partition Manager. If that is done then the set up proceeds relatively smoothly.

In my opinion you need to reorganize your partitions and start the Windows 7 installation de-novo to get a good stable system in the end.

It's easiest to use the Win7 installer to delete and create partitions as you wish, format before installing to first partition: Clean Install Windows 7

You can also leave the partitioning the same to preserve a Recovery or Data partition, just select C to install. The installer will auto-format the partition if you don't.

Easiest of all is to delete all partitions during install, then just click Next to let the installer create and format your install partition (and a small boot partition) for you.

Sometimes there is important data stored in the other partitions that one may not like to get rid of. I am not sure if the Windows 7 installer can re-size a partition without deleting it. That is why I had suggested the use of a good Partition Manager.

If you are starting with a completely clean slate then it does not matter if you use the Windows Partition Manager or a third party one.
