Installation Problems: Build 7100 on GA-EX58-UD5

I am out of ideas and would appreciate any help or insight.

Windows 7 x64 RC does not want to complete installation after it's first reboot. The "starting windows" animation appears and just keeps going.

A boot into safe mode shows it stops after:
Loaded: \Windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys

Not sure if this is part of the problem or the next driver to load after it is the real culprit.

My System:
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 - Updated BIOS F7
6GB (3x2GB) Corsair 1600
Core i7 920 (no OC)
2x300GB Velociraptor drives
1xDVD+-RW IDE
Diamond ATI Radeon HD 4890

HDD's are attached to SATA0 & SATA1 on the Intel ICH10R
DVD drive attached to the first port of the JMB322 JMicron/Gigabyte SATA interface

I've tried the following while installing:
Installing with all Fail-Safe Defaults

Install to a RAID 0 array of the two drives with and without AHCI enabled on the JMicron controller and with the ACPI settings to S1 and then S3

Installing to the first HDD with AHCI mode set for the ICH10R with and without AHCI enabled on the JMicron controller and with the ACPI settings to S1 and then S3

Installing to the first HDD with the AHCI Disabled (IDE mode) for the ICH10R with and without AHCI enabled on the JMicron controller and with the ACPI settings to S1 and then S3

All configurations tried with native mode both on and off for the ICH10R SATA interface.

When installing I've tried no extra drivers and then every combination of using the latest drivers from Gigabyte's website at the disk selection menu of installation:

Intel Storage Driver for OS Installation and no JMicron Driver

JMicron driver for OS Install and no Intel driver

Both Intel and JMicron Drivers loaded

I've confirmed the MD5 sum of the ISO on two different machines (after transferring via USB stick

I've burned 4 DVD's on two different machines using two different brands of known good media, 1 burn of each brand per machine on two different DVD burners at normal write speed and then at 1x.


Also, thinking that the optical drive might be the problem, I disconnected both power and data to it and rebooted to no avail.
I then disabled the JMicron interface in the bios altogether (with the DVD drive still disconnected) to no better result.

The system will boot an operating system. I had successfully installed the Xubuntu x64 9.04 Linux CD that I had on hand (w/o RAID of course) and it did work.

I really hope I just missed something stupid and obvious and any help would be appreciated.

Here's the deal as well as I've been able to figure out.

The RAID controller driver will not install with Windows 7 x64 Beta or RC (no testing on 32-bit revs).

The drivers *will* function after a successful installation of the operating system. If you're in my shoes, though, that doesn't help a bit.

The IC10 RAID chipset is really just a beefed up software (aka fake) RAID. The only thing it does that makes it so convincing is that it allows the BIOS to see the logical soft RAID partition and start the chainloader from it. From that point on the IC10 hands off control back to the host operating system.

The only way I have found so far has been to first install Vista x64 with the Intel drivers and then subsequently "upgrade" that installation to Windows 7 x64.

This only works with Vista x64 as you cannot cross-upgrade from x86 to x64 and the Vista x64 drivers will find their way into Windows 7 via the upgrade.

Intel did have some Windows 7 drivers for the Storage Matrix, however I could not get the Windows 7 Beta or RC to use them.

If anyone finds another way please post!

No help I know but I have the same mobo and just installed Win7 x64 and its been rock solid from the word go.
I started with 7100 und upgraded to 7229, Will be going to 7232 as soon as the download finishes.

Do you have any indication that the newer builds support the IC10 RAID BIOS or at least take the Vista x64 drivers on boot?

It was a complete new build, 2 x 1TB Samsung SATA drives.
I just booted the PC up, Entered the RAID BIOS, set it up to RAID 0 Striping and let it get on with it.
The original install was with version 7100, then upgraded to 7229, I am now running 7232 and have not had any problems at all.
SATA was set as IDE mode when I first set up but have since altered the registry and enabled AHCI, Again, with no problems at all.
I know its of no direct help to you but thankfully, It's been plain sailing for me.
Will be good to know what comes of this though, Just incase.

Was it a vanilla install or did you tell setup to load drivers from a usb or floppy?

The drives are on SATA2 0 and SATA2 1, So they are on the ICHR10 controller, I did not need any driver disc for the install, Win7 just went on it's merry way and installed.

Were you connected to the internet to download "installer updates" when booting from setup?

My thought: they may have patched the setup but I wouldn't know that because of the use of my wifi card...

I can only say as it was a few weeks ago now that I 'almost certainly' was connected to the net at the time and 'almost certainly' would have said to search for updates for the install.
That is what I would do now so must have done at the time.

Don't know if this helps guys, but I've got a similar EX58-UD5 setup.

Win 7 wouldn't install the Intel drivers during setup for me either (off floppy)....however, I'm dual booting with Vista x64 and the drivers work for it.

I have a feeling those drivers taking in the Vista setup means I can get Win 7 to load and get the Matrix Manager to install (new one out for Win 7 by the way) so the system becomes stable, cause before I installed Matrix, it was BSOD'ing on sleep.

Now it won't come out of hibernation, but it will come out of sleep. I'm still getting disk errors show up in event log, but other than not hibernating it's completely stable.

Gonna go to 7232, apprarently 7100 and similar early RC builds have RAID issues.
