I installed widowns vista on a new hard drive so I could upgrade to Windows 7. During the W7 upgrade I reach the "Copying Windows files" stage, reach 73% completed, and the computer just sits there. After 30-40 minutes, I get this message -- error code 0x8007045D. I've tried both an upgrade and custom installation to no avail.

As suggested by another blogger, I did a chkdsk scan, ran windows 7 upgrade advisor, and also did the following, per his instructions ...
1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
User Account Control permission
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click OK.
6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
7. Attempt the upgrade again

Still no go. Any thoughts?

It isn't necessary to install Vista to use the Upgrade version: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

Try booting the installer to do a Custom install. The DVD will scan the HD to see Vista and allow Upgrade key.

Where did you get Win7? Did you burn the DVD? Verify it with ImgBurn. If necessary burn another at 4x speed with Verify.

You can also try install from flash: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2432-usb-windows-7-installation-key-drive-create.html

Well ... the problem ended up being a disk with a "smudge" on it. Cleaned the disk well, and it installed.
