Installation stops

Hi,
I am running a dual core AMD 64 4000+ with a dual boot of windows XP and Linux. Unfortunately, my XP got virused so I deleted it yet still have some NTFS partitions. So the first partition is clean and I try to install Windows 7 it starts copying the files over but when the background appears for setup and the mouse cursor appears, it stops and nothing happens. I cannot ctrl-alt-del or anything.

I was hoping there was a simple solution and I am frustrated because there doesn't seem to be a md5 check to see if the image is corrupted.
Thanks very much for any help and I hope I don't have to keep burning disks like it seems many are doing. (It may have downloaded incorrectly, who knows).

Try deleting that partition entirely and let windows set the partition up (ie. dont create a new one, just point to the hard disk).

You will have less problems with a clean install on another partition.

I can't get to the screen where I choose which partition to install on. If I do are you saying to install it on a partition other than the boot one?

Yes, or else shrink an existing partition and install Windows 7 into that free space as mentioned above.

Ok but I watched the video tutorial he posted and it gets to minute 3:25 after it has copied the files and stops. I guess my only option is to burn another and try?

Please be a bit more clear on what you are doing and what your problem is....

sorry, yes the video @ 3:25. The burn went fine.

I just watched the video past it - try watching it now, it might have been a connection issue before.

Also, try cleaning out your cache so it DLs it fresh from the site.

ahahahah, I created a thread last night with the exact same title and I thought this was mine. Sorry for the confusion, and I hope you guys fix your problem

OK but its my boot disk. Isn't that dangerous? What about Grub? Won't the MBR be affected?

yes, right, apologies but will deleting my boot partition affect the MBR or my GRUB? (the Linux startup manger)

Your best bet is to wipe the *disk* boot to Win7 make a couple (several depending upon how you install *nix) partitions, install Win7 in the last, then install *nix. Or, you could wipe them all, create all the partitions, install *nix, then install Win 7 afterward.

The first method should allow you to use GRUB as your boot manager (after some grub.ini editing to recognize the Win7 part and boot) and the second method will let you use the Win7 boot manager to control the booting - not sure how well that works with 7 and *nix, but I have seen it working with my own eyes, so I know it is possible....

Hello guys.

I have a similar problem. I am running a Windows XP pro 32 bit on a Asus Commando with a Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 and 2 Gb Memory.

I downloaded Windows 7 rc 64bits from the Microsoft site and burned to a DVD with PowerIso (2 times now) and tried to do a clean install. Guess what the instalation stops before it gets to the part where is supposed to choose the language (i know this because i saw the pics in the clean install tuturial). Mouse works but nothing happens its just a screen with nothing on it.

Can you guys help?

yes, this is similar to the problem I had. I am re-downloading RC from another site to try and see if it works. Good luck, and I hope you have good bandwidth.

hi, i'm having some problems instaling the rc also, but i cant guet past the windows is starting before the setup begins, any idea to solve this? its not the iso because it runs on another pc, and tryed other iso's. Also build 7077 gives same problem but not the 7022 with installs.
I'm tying to install on a Acer 1414 WLMI. Tanks
