I was shocked at how much space Windows 7 uses. Because of this I couldn't install my Steam account or Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. When I had XP I could install 3-4 games at a clip. My hard drive in 80gb. I'm looking to buy a bigger hard drive. Since I already installed and activated Windows 7 on this drive, can I reinstall on the larger hard drive or is this a one time deal with this copy?

I would hope unless it's a beta version you could call MS and tell them you changed out hard drives. I do it with XP when I change machines and they give me another activation code.

Hi and Welcome to SevenForums

The Win 7 install is really small 10gig's of space, with mine all prog'ss install and everything else that i keep with the os it's only 19 gig. So i really don't know how you have run out of space on an 80 gig hdd

If you clean installed over Vista or XP, then there may be a windows.old folder in the root which has the entire previous OS along with all of your files. Once you retrieve your files, you can delete it using Disk Cleanup.

If it is an OEM license, you can reinstall it to the same hardware as often as you want. If it is a retail license, you can move it anywhere you want.

Gregrocker, that's exactly what happened. I installed 7 over a previous XP version. Where exactly can I find this root to delete?

I found 2 Windows folders when I clicked "My Computer".: One that just says Windows and the other Windows.old. These must be it because the date modified on average on the folders in these files was 7/14/09. Some folders were older some were newer. Are these the ones to delete Gregrocker?

Get what you want from windows.old and then you can delete it

Thanks a lot guys. That solved my problem big time. Wow, the amount of space I recovered was amazing. Thanks again gregrocker and redsoxm16.
