Installed new HD left old HD in new HD won't boot

I just installed a new HD and didn't think to take the old one out first. I installed windows 7 enterprise 64 bit and after installation could boot to either HD. When I removed the old HD, the new one would not boot giving "Disk Boot Failure" I have tried to repair the boot with a repair disk but no success. Maybe hook old drive up and boot to the new drive and copy the boot files from the old drive to the new one?

Run the Repair/Install 3 times on just the new HD. That should repair the boot files onto the new HD.

Yeah that is because all the BOOT files were on the old hard drive. Once you removed it there was nothing to boot even though the main OS files were on the new drive.


Side note:
It has nothing to do with jumpers as there are no jumpers on SATA drives.

Hello 1eddieboy1, welcome to Seven Forums!


Connect the old HDD so Windows 7 will boot; starting at Option One of this tutorial at the link below, mark the Windows 7 partition Active then power down the PC and disconnect the old HDD and connect the Windows 7 HDD to the #1 SATA post of the motherboard and set it as the second boot device in the PC BIOS after the CD/DVD drive.

Boot the Windows 7 installation media to run the 3 separate startup repairs discussed in the same tutorial to (re)create the "System" boot files to the Windows 7 partition and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.
