With the help of many, here, I installed Win 7. It went perfectly. Took 30-40 minute,s plus the rest of the day to install everything that had been removed. I am one of the few people that can easily find my old CD's and DVD's to reinstall. I still have my windows 98 CD.
In any event, I had a little disappointment. I checked the HP website for printer drives, prior to installation, and it appeared that they had one for W7. When I went to install it, I pop up appeared, indicating that there would be nove available until Nov. 13, guess, no printing until then.
Thanks to all that answered my many questions, the last few weeks.

Depending on the actual printer you may want to check if there is a Vista driver available - although not optimised for Windows 7 it would probably allow you to print until the actual driver is released.

If you right click on the installer and set to run as administrator and in compatibility mode for Vista SP1 it should install

Some generic printer driver should install as soon as you plug the USB cable in. Unplug it beforehand when the system is powered off.

Part of the treat of the new OS, is that there were no problems. I was really prepared for the worst, but in actuality it was better than expected. I had CD or DVD's for most of my equipment. The only problem was with the printer, the DVD did not install the driver. I went to the HP site and tried to download Vista's but it did not install. I will try the previous member' suggestion tomorrow. I did not use the windows update. I was told that a lot of their downloads are not the most current. It took so much time for a clean install, that I invested a little more and used my CD's and a trip to HP.

Just a couple of hints for you. I did not need to change partition size etc, so I did the Clean instal byl booting within windows. That method ran perfectly for me.

I can tell you this, you will be very happy with 7. Yes, a lot like Vista, but even I can tell on my first day, a lot better. Some awesome features: makes a copy of your entire hard drive, will back up your personal documents either on the HD or external or finger, or CD.

I use Windows live mail and it fits like a glove to Win 7.

Best of luck to you
Rich

Thanks dude! I will definitely use some of your tips there, but there is one snag. A driver cd was never included with my pc, and I don't know why. I even looked on HP's site, and it said that nothing else was included in the box. What do I do?

HP will have a webpage for your model with drivers archived there. But as OP points out, most all drivers are included in the WIn7 installer or given by WIndows Updates afterwards.

OP: the stock win7 driver or Vista driver should allow you to print, or run scans using WIndows scan utility by right-clicking on Printer in the new Devices and Printers control panel on your Start menu. If HP is giving a date specific then at least you know they have one coming.

Get your printer ready, dont turn it on and dont attach it to computer. Go to the website. Download the drive that you need. When told to, turn on your computer (might be nice to attach it to the cable) and follow instructions.

Plan 2 probably not needed go to Device and printer, click on add printer. Then, now let me think, oh yes, follow instructions.

I wish you luck. Tell us how u made out

I'm installing tomorrow and I have put all my drivers and smaller program setups that I downloaded off the web (like WinAmp, Picasa or Firefox) on a USB key. That way once installed, I just got to plug that in and install them quickly without having to search for them.

I just want to point out, if you are looking in the Windows 7 available printer drivers, make sure you click the Windows Update button. Your printer may be added if you do. Also make sure there is not more than one HP or other manufacturer entries.

I got the same message so I installed the Vista64 drivers. The computer doesn't recognize the printer properly but it prints. When the new ones come out I'll update.

Oh, and the stupid HP installation program doesn't work. I downloaded the Vista drivers and when they were in my system files I "add printer" and directed it to the .inf file and it loaded.

We have a Photosmart C4680 which Win7 autoloaded drivers for as soon as we turned it on. This driver allows us to print normally, and scan by right clicking on printer in Devices & Printers which brings up Windows scan utility.

When trying to install the special software that came with the printer, it failed repeatedly. We decided we didn't need it anyway. Just took the drivers.

I don't have a printer attached to my computer since it's a laptop and I don't have wireless one either. I was just talking in general.

I got my old HP scanner software to work using a compatibility mode. Now all the buttons work as normal. You may have to install as admin and maybe compatibility there also, don't remember.
